From https://www.arcanoae.com/arcaos-5-0-blue-lion-coming/

(April 23rd)

$99? That's within my threshold of pain. eCS was always well over 100GBP, and seeing as I'd already faffed around a lot to get a Warp 4 VM working..

"The final beta for ArcaOS 5.0 is due for release to beta testers within hours. We’ve spent considerable time nailing down the last of what we consider to have been critical issues (likely installation pitfalls) to ensure that our users are able to get the operating system installed and get on with using and enjoying the new version as soon as possible. While our intent was to provide more details along the way, our focus has remained on the software, and as we are all engineers here, in one form or another, we’ve all been engaged in developing and testing.

Meanwhile, some announcements:

Pricing for ArcaOS 5.0 will be in two tiers, set apart by the level and length of support and maintenance bundled with each. The personal license will retail for $129, with an introductory price of $99 for the first 90 days following release. This includes six months of support and maintenance updates and fixes. The commercial license is priced at $229, and includes one year of support and maintenance. Subscription services will be available for each version and it will be possible to bundle extended support and maintenance subscriptions at the time of ArcaOS license purchase.

Volume discounts will be available, as well, with different discount levels for personal and commercial licenses."

Thanks ynari!

I'm curious how it will be. eComstation has been around since a few years now,
but I haven't heard about Blue Lion until a few weeks ago.

Here are a few other links I have found so far.
It's not much, though. No screen shots or any system requirements.
I assume it's like Warp 4, but more modern "under the hood" ?

Some new features it is said to have are:
SMP, ACPI, USB 1.1 and 2.0, ALSA sound driver, AHCI support (SATA), new ethernet drivers, CUPS for printers
- I really hope it does at least support USB 3.x controllers in USB 2.0 mode. True, native 2.0 ports are getting scarce..

It's the same base as eCS, and although they develop some of their own software, they're using similar third party components so I'm expecting it to be pretty similar.

We shall see! I was always a big OS/2 fan, but couldn't justify buying a modern version I'd rarely use, up until now.

As to USB 3 - it's not listed, but surely it's easy to get an addon card that supports USB 2, and it probably works in USB 3 ports in backwards compatibility mode..

Their website suggests it's about supporting current users, rather than changing the world or even being a toy os. Not immediately clear what hardware is supported. It mentions windows 3.1 and dos applications, and things being ported from linux. Doesn't sound like a windows 10 substitute nor is it being presented as one; only mention it because after fighting with microphone settings and more recently struggling to get my razer mouse to act sensibly after a driver upgrade, I might be interested in such a thing [j/k]!

There will still be some commercial users with OS/2 requirements, and getting basic Warp 4 working on modern machines is an arse. Updating Warp 4 with all the fixpacks is a bit annoying, too.

Quite how large the consumer population of ex and current OS/2 users prepared to buy a newish version is, is a good question..
