Nah, it's real. I just needed a place to host it temporarily. I've finally found the password to my Pastebin account. Will delete the thread in a few.

Better use it while you can before notepad 3D comes out and you'll have to download the old notepad from the Windows Store. heh.

you think I'm the only one wanting to know what controller chips are on upgrade cards that don't say in their specs, and you have to look at (possibly stock) photos, or dive into the comments section, in order to determine it?

Research deserves exposure. Hell, that's one of the founding principles of VOGONS.

I recently had to image an 80 GB drive over USB 1.1 connection. Fortunately it was mostly empty. Still took some three hours though.

Is this too much voodoo?

What I cannot understand is USB 3.1 on PCIe 2.0 x1. PCIe 2.0 x1 theoretical bandwidth is 5Gbps, just like USB 3.0. USB 3.1 is 10Gbps. So even theoretically the card cannot deliver anything over what USB 3.0 gives in terms of speed. What other advantages to being called 'USB 3.1' might there be?

The good cards are those that have two ports on the back and a front panel header for two more ports. I've used two of these at various times. One with Renesas uPD720201, one with Via VL805.

There are also some PCIe x4 cards with 4 separate uPD720201 chips, each on its own lane, and a PCIe bridge between them. Expensive stuff.

It's because I was upgrading a PC that only had x1 slots. The client specifically requested USB3 compatibility. Well aware of the bottleneck that even USB 3.0 will have but they wanted more ports, so... And then I was originally told I had ordered a 3.1 card when it turned out that I hadn't paid attention to the USB Implementers Forum "rebranding" 3.0 as 3.1 Gen 1. This annoyed me, so I made my list.

I'm quite pleased with all the conversation that erupted out of all this. 😀

In case anyone was wondering, I have one of these 3.0 cards in my machine. I literally chose the cheapest one off ebay with 4 ports and a 4-pin molex power connector. works just fine with my cell phone and card reader.
