Any idea if there is a way to extract infos like cpu type or ram quantity from an hdd I got from another PC and mounted as external usb unit? This hard drive still contains all files of the other machine's OS and I'd like to know where Windows stores infos about the machine's hardware. The original machine died and I only have its hdd at hand now.

Unlikely, unless the original owner had a CPU bench or something which saved out the last time it was run on it's original host machine.

There is information in Registry for the processor, but unfortunately its not persisted. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc959353.aspx.
Ram amount ... very unlikely.
