http://www.pcgamer.com/the-best-pc-games/

Every year, the team compiles a list of the 100 best PC games you can play today. Our process is deliberately subjective: each participant picks their personal top 15 games, and then the team gathers to narrow that list. We only allow one entry per series, with a couple of notable exceptions.

"Take a deep breath...they did say subjective..and you know ..the game that you like is ON the list...just calm down..nope..not working."

Meh, whatever. The list contains plenty of good games. Doom II at ~76 makes me cringe though 😊 .. I still happen to think of Doom II as the most high octane and fun shooter of all time and it still stands up that way compared to any modern game. Also how can they go that far back and not even include any build engine games, no Duke3d? Poop on this list !!!!

But who am I 😎

Doom II wasn't as big of a influential splash as Doom though. Doom II only added a few things and cemented itself into retail where Doom didn't..

Going a tad off the thread path here, but to reply:

I should elaborate. I consider Doom 2 to be an expansion to Doom and usually include Doom 1 as the base of it. It was a much more complete game with way more enemies and action, new weapon, and TONS of new textures added to the solid Doom engine. Modding really blew up with Doom II. The timespan between the two was only around 9 months

Also Doom 2 DID make a huge splash as I recall. The parties around it at the time were absolutely gigantic, it had a commercial release as opposed to mail order registered copies, and it caused new hardware to fly off the shelves. As big as Doom 1 was at the time, it was a BBS blockbuster and quickly spread through the PC scene through the shareware distributions, but Doom 2 launch the following year put PC gaming right in the mainstream in the fall of '94. Console gamers started buying desktops in droves to get in on the action. Of course that's my memory and nostalgia of it all, I remember fighting to get a copy before it was sold out because it flew off the shelves in central NJ for a straight year.

Doom for life 🤣

Interesting. There's only seven games in their top 40 that I'd include in my top 40.

I guess the Monkey Island series, Heroes of Might and Magic series, Master of Orion series, Ultima series, Warcraft series, Starcraft series, Close Combat series, Jagged Alliance series, Age of Empires series, Wing Commander series, TIE Fighter, etc. just don't compare anymore when you could be playing Zero Escape, N++, Spelunky and Ladykiller in A Bind.

Their 50 most important PC games list is a bit better:

Still, it's amazing there isn't a single flight/driving sim (from the golden age) on that list even though they were really something in the early 90's and defined the use of vector graphics in games. Falcon 3.0 should've been there at least.
