^ what is it all about?

I just want to say goodbye to this very fun thread, and my special thanks to vetz for creating it.

Now, how about creating a sequel ebay thread? All for?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

A very sad decision. I use this thread daily and more, than 10 items was buyed after anounce in ebay thread.
Can't understand/accept all listed "reasons" (I'm owner and moderator of some local retrotech sites, so I have a background of this kind work)

I did use that thread a bit, but never bought anything off of it. Unless you count the 486 motherboard/cpu/RAM bundle for $38 that *I* posted there, then a day later noticed no one bought it yet, so I ended up buying it myself. That's how I got my 486 system. 😊 Once the drama started, I barely visited that thread anymore. I don't have time for that stuff.

If I posted "found this very nice Diamond Monster MX300 on ebay" on this thread, what the worst could happen to my account? 🤣

Sad to see it go as it did help a lot of people throughout the years. I hope you change your mind on this, but you know best what you can tolerate in this forum. I can't remember if I specifically bought something after seeing it in that thread, but I was tempted a few times. Nevertheless, it was fun to read through all the drama 🤣 .

Thank you vetz for creating that thread!
The drama still continues and is hilarious, keep it coming guys 😁.

First the post would get moderated, if you continue, I'm sure Qbix will have some ideas about it. I don't see what the goal would be though if you do that.

This was the "destroyed high expectations" thread for me, as every cheap part link that I would click would turn out to be for a US seller and had insane shipping charges 🤣

In this odd case the life raft for this event was launched like 6 months ago: reddit.com/r/VOGONs

Anywho, it might be a good thing that thread was gone. It was useful but at the same time I know scalpers picked over it and anytime something was posted to that thread the price skyrocketed. It also went off topic constantly and there were several members who just used it to promote there own stuff (Voodooman, I'm looking at you)

VOGONs is still a good place to discuss retro computing.

I just discovered Jade Falcon got banned.

Okay, I didn't quite follow the drama. All I knew kithylin badmouthed an ebay seller on the ebay thread, and the seller fought back. But it happened on page 480 while the thread got locked in page 544. What exactly happened in the 64 pages in-between?

Thanks. I was unable to find it, though I found plenty of eBay threads on individual items over there.
Last post in that thread seems to be December 1, 2017 -- nowhere near as active as the VOGONS thread was.

cyclone3d wrote:

I just wish the eBay thread could stay here. The color scheme of this forum is much easier on the eyes.

I liked seeing the items that VOGONS members found.
The eBay thread at VOGONS was a lot more active than the one at vcfed, and I agree about the color scheme.

I bought a couple of things that were posted in the old VOGONS eBay thread -- one was an ISA sound card and the other was another ISA card, though it's been long enough that I don't remember if it was a sound card or a controller card. I wouldn't have found either without the VOGONS thread because of the way they were listed on eBay (by sellers who didn't really know what they had).

I fail to see how shutting down that thread will stop the trolls. Most of the long time trolls are still here, trolling in other areas of the site (with far less visibility).

I personally don't like vcfed as much because there was (not sure if it's still there anymore) a snobbish sentiment of what constitutes 'vintage'.

There was also the spin-off thread where Jade Falcon took over sixty posts excoriating a "bad seller" and someone joining VOGONS *only* to post in that thread about their similar experience, and the lengths they would go to to exact revenge, including doxxing, before a moderator finally took action. dcsliquidations on ebay are true dickbags

All related to eBay auctions.

All I can say is: this is one of the problems with moderators policing VOGONS and cleaning up everything, splitting off posts, deleting others, just so the rest of you can have a pleasant experience: You don't see the ugly side of things, unless you are *constantly* active and reading VOGONS.

Based on my years of experience here, never has there been a thread that has required more constant policing and cleanup. Sorry, vetz.

It had reached a point where it required constant policing for shilling, and responding to people using the "Report Post" feature to report on each other, endless drama about bad sellers and bad buyers flying around, forum moderators who cared extremely little for such things having to constantly visit eBay to ensure people weren't breaking the intent and spirit of the thread, complaints about pricing, pissing contests, forum members reporting other forum members for various shenanigans, all sorts of drama.

The forum moderators had been privately discussing what to do for months, and had created an ongoing thread stacking up every time a complaint was made about someone or something going on in that thread.. I guess it reached a tipping point, but some of the worst drama lately had been overly egregious. And of course, open selling had never been allowed and that thread had always come right up to the line and crossed it many, many times, and so finally Qbix made an executive decision.

On the other hand, the "Bought New (retro) Hardware Today" thread is at over a thousand pages and is much more well behaved.

It is not snobbish. You just happen to not agree with it, that does not make it snobbish. I happen to agree with them that Pentium 4 is NOT vintage, neither is Pentium 3. Pentium II is pushing it. Which is why I like VCFED. It just happens that their views of what is considered old are different than same views here.

First time I came to vogons I was totally surprised to see people talking about Core2Duo as "vintage" processor. But that does not mean it is wrong either. For me vintage is 6502 and the like, definitely not Tualeron.

Retro and Vintage are definitely different. I think a lot of people call stuff "vintage" when it really is not old enough to be called that.

Basically, you can call vintage stuff retro, but unless it is of a certain age, you can't call retro stuff vintage.

Aside from the things Stiletto mentioned. Yesterday, he started editing his old posts to include porn images and starting posting all kind insults to the staff.

For those wondering why I was so upset and leaving it's two things:

1.) Regardless of whether I bad-mouthed a seller or not, on all other forums on the internet.. if someone comes on there and openly attacks a long-time member of their forums as their first opening post, they would of been banned and the posts deleted. I reported it here, the admins did nothing at all. They don't care. They probably enjoyed watching what would happen afterwards and left it for that reason. I contributed a good bit of info and other things here over 6 years. Apparently the admins don't care about their users and just let random 1-post-wonder idiots come assault us and let it go.

2.) I went through yesterday and I wanted to delete a lot of my posts. The admins in their infinite wisdom decided to lock down the forums so we can't edit anymore and then went behind my back and actually restored and undeleted a lot of it. It's things I wrote up and it's my writing and I wanted it gone. They can't even respect my wishes to delete my own content that I created/wrote. Which is completely inexcusable.

I'm still watching this thread and what happens here on vogons for a few days before finally leaving for good, but just thought folks out there wondering why, that's why.

Not to mention he mentioned that he'd been on VOGONS (and banned? IDK) many many times before, under many other names. Definitely frowned upon.

🤣 this could branch off into a huge off topic debate.

To a 20 year old, where the experience of existence and memory is only a range of about 15 years, a Pentium 4 is some ancient cave tool used by those who came before him. Therefore it's vintage and retro.

To me anything after slot 1 is "new", "retro" is 8 bit (apple, commodore, atari) - 16 bit dos, "vintage" is a Magnavox Odyssey (a cave tool used by those who came before me).

My father, who was already an adult for all of these machines would probably be arguing why anything newer than a PDP-11 is not vintage.

My grandfather would scold us about the work of Howard Aiken and consider anything with a transistor instead of a vacuum tube to be too new.

In short, it's a silly argument 🤣

Sup. I like computers. Are you a computer?

IMO the thread entered a nose dive when (and this is partially my fault) you posted that one guy being a dick when declining offers on some card he posted (that was missing a dependency card it couldn't work without) for several hundred dollars and I got bored and decided to brigade him and told him he was being ridiculed on a forum full of potential buyers and that he should have been honored someone even offered $25 for his piece of garbage. I didn't think he would actually figure out where I was referring to but he showed up a few hours later. That was the start of the chain of drama.

Also. Everyone who is trying to delete there posts: You put your comments into the public domain and then tried to either delete them or use them as retroactive attacks. The moderators were 100 percent correct in restoring them to there original state.

We have no one but ourselves to thank for this.

About 75 pages of drama, apparently.

For the record, my definition of "vintage computing" is; "anything beyond practical usefulness, where its only remaining function is cosmetic". The 2nd part is the big one. A P4 is beyond practical use, but still is useful. If it was all you had, you can still get by. The internet would still mostly work, you can get things done, etc. Once you get to pentium 1/2 things really go from "useful" to almost completely useless. Obviously games and "looking good" are the only real remaining uses.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
