There was some drama in another thread that forced the mods to temporarily remove editing. They suggested to PM a mod with the edit you want to make until they can turn it back on.

Yes - speaking as a mod: one forum member had openly stated that they were going to blank all their informative posts ever in protest, and was inciting other people to follow suit. When this forum member started actually doing this, action was taken. Rather extreme, I know. Editing has been locked, so far as I know, only temporarily (except to moderators/admins), and moderators have started discussing whether after all this time, a time-based edit lock should be instituted.

It's sad that a few people can spoil things for the rest of us.

If only one member actually started deleting his own stuff, I don't believe removing the option for everyone is the logical choice for this dilemma. And I'm really trying to be very polite here overthinking my words so that I won't add fuel to the fire.

But nothing has been decided. The global lock on editing and on new registrations was to deal with the things that happened yesterday, where accounts were created to post porn and insults and 2 members were actively editing old posts, to either delete them or to insult me or other members of the staff.

I did see someone post porn on here, and luckily, I reported it. There should be a new rule for posting something for new members: moderate the new post before being placed on the web to make sure the posts are on topic, just like vcfed.org (must have at least 10 post to not have the new post be moderated, but have notifications sent to the moderators or admins if there's anything illegal or graphic posted on here). Who's with me on this?

So that is what happened.... I wanted to add some more to a post, regarding a manual for a Side JR Pro controller.
No big deal, as I just created yet another post instead of editing.

I *really* pray we decide it's not necessary, as it goes against my methodology in the times I have been most active, but it would mean that a forum member couldn't edit a post (not a thread lock) after a day, a week, a month, a year, something arbitrarily decided. This is a potential feature of phpBB, we just don't have it turned on.

Please don't let one banned member enable time-lock on edit. It havent been a problem previously. They have this feature on VCF and it is annoying as crazy. I have some posts here on that is updated reguarly (3D API list) and if I have to contact a mod everytime to add something or correct a bad URL it is going to waste everyone's time.

I‘m more in the time-lock team, because it hasn’t been just one user doing this. There have been several of those over the years. Not necessarily rage quitting like this but slowly turning their posts here into nothing, breaking threads etc. It’s sad to watch this.
But I do see that it is a bother, especially with long threads that need the first post updated...

I can't believe people actually do this. Why would you destroy your contribution to a community and to this hobby as revenge for some perceived offense?

I'm with vetz on this: my posts are not too frequented or relevant, but they are on the long side and I like to keep an index of sorts in the first post. Asking a mod to edit would be a bother for everyone involved, so I'm glad a "pro time-lock" mod recognizes this as a problem.

That said, I understand where Dominus is coming from, specially with the recent drama.

The lack of the "edit" button shouldn't be mean to be seen as a "nuisance", even though it actually is.

Right now I'm working and putting together a Socket 7 computer and I'm daily reporting updates and status on the work in one of my biggest threads so far, thus without the "edit" button, I must post multiple messages one after another: I must add and report news on how this building process is going on, especially if I encounter some problems and I have advices to give to others on certain things.

I am more, for a "strike-rule"/warning system. If misbehaving, like those who caused the drama, then the edit button will be removed. If your account are banned/locked, then you can not edit anyway. So.... Adding a simple "button=visible/invisible" checkbox in the code behind/admin-panel for each indevidual users, would actually make it pretty easy to manage bad apples. Instead of just throwing the whole basket out.

I agree, or you can also make a custom user group with the edit function locked and drop those bad gangsters in that group.

Downside is more work for moderators, so they have to be up to the task. If an official apology are issued by the user in question, it can be reinstated again. Or something like that. Anyway... I don't care what the outcome will be, regarding this feature, though I hope the outcome will be fair for every user here.

A strike rule system or a group for baddies won't work for the mentioned cases. There is almost no edit abuse in normal forum use. The abuse is almost always a one time big event. Before you can react with rules, the posts are gone.
