I like a lot of this style right up until the saxophone starts. 😜 Some of it reminds me of cable TV info channels a bit too much, but there's a lot of interesting musical ideas in the genre that got ignored later & plenty of good music to be found. The synth-ier the better. That Tim Heintz album (Summer Rain) & the Benoit/Freeman project are good stuff.

A while ago I tried to get into Yacht Rock (which is bascially the same stuff only with vocals, whiter & less musically interesting), mostly because it's dirt cheap to buy on vinyl, but my tolerance for that ends after about an hour of listening.

Sorry King_C I'd like to show support for you here but I can't come at any form of jazz I'm afraid. I keep expecting to grow into it but no signs of that so far 🤣

I like jazz, but smooth jazz just doesn't have any edge to it.

As for it sounding like the info channels that's because a lot of this music or similar stuff was used by them and the weather channel through the years. 🤣 I've also found out that modern Vaporwave rips off a lot of this stuff.

@gdjacobs What styles are you into? I love jazz in general but at this time this is my thing. 🤣 I'm also fond of Fusionjazz and Jazz funk from the 70's and I LOVE loungey jazz from the 60's. 🤣

In all seriousness, Kenny G is ok if a bit overplayed. If you like Jazz/Jazz Fusion you should check out Steps Ahead particularly their album "Magnetic".

My uncle was a big WNUA fan, I was more than a bit bummed out when they went to the all-latin format. He also had really good taste in music, I miss being able to talk music with him (he passed away in my mid/late 20s).

Chicago radio just hasn't been the same since around 2000. There is no more good talk radio either. Kevin Matthews, Steve Dahl, Johnathan Brandmeier...all those guys are gone and either on the internet or in other markets entirely. I can still download a podcast if I want to but it's not quite the same. I think Q101 still plays alternative but that music never quite resonated the same way for me that 80s stuff did, although for some reason I missed big chunks of 80s New Wave (we didn't have cable tv with MTV until like 1986 or 87 maybe, and I didn't start seriously listening to music until 88 or 89, so perhaps that is why I missed a lot of things). Like I can remember Tears for Fears, The Bangles, Genesis, Human League, Thomas Dolby and Peter Gabriel but I completely missed Joy Division, New Order, Art of Noise, early MInistry (before they started playing industrial music) just to name a few. Seriously, my only exposure to Ministry during that time was when they used part of "Every Day is Halloween" for that one beer commercial (I want to say it was for Michelob Ultra or something?) So I'm going back now and filling in the gaps in my music knowledge of that era.

If you like guitar-heavy stuff, especially instrumental music, make sure to check out Leo Kotke, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. All amazing artists. I want to say that Satriani gave Kirk Hammet (of Metallica) lessons way back in the day, but I could be remembering incorrectly. I know he taught someone that went on to be famous, may not have been him though.

Yea, I know all about those guys 😀
I've been playing guitar for some 25 years now, and Joe Satriani was one of my biggest influences. He taught Hammett indeed, and also Steve Vai (who also makes some awesome music, although some of his work is somewhat of an 'acquired taste').
I originally started out as a rock/metal player, but over time I wanted to jazz things up a bit, do more of a fusion-like thing, so I also started getting into guys like Eric Johnson, Neal Schon etc. Andy Timmons is also a good name in that list.

Nice I actually kinda like that! Thanks for linking, also I totally agree the airwaves are bare as hell these days. Even Prarie Home Companion was just recently taken down thanks to a scandal. Many other shows I used to listen to are gone as well. Hotel Milwaukee, Shadenfreude, Car Talk and a bunch of other things not to mention old time radio like (Actually I guess this is still going but it's not hosted by Chuck Shaden anymore) Those were the days and when Stan Freburg hosted "When Radio Was". Of course like was said all our jazz stations are gone too now and we don't have any proper oldies either anymore, oldies now consists of 80's music and 70's music which is ridiculous. When I was kid in the 90's I used to listen to 104.3 almost every day and that was all 60's and 50's music then. Of course that station changed to RAP of all things sometime during the 2000's...

I listened to Steps Ahead, and while it's okay, I can't help but feel it's a lower-rent version of Flim and the BB's, whose work I can't recommend enough.
