All I can remember about it were the following:

  • It focused around a low poly, flatshaded, gray bird flying through the night.
  • The trees were just brown and green lines arranged vaguely resembling pinetrees
  • The horizon effect was very similar to the Spectre games. (low colour gradient)
  • The ground sometimes is populated by lights in a very periodical pattern also similar to the Spectre games.
  • Video mode resembled (possibly was) Mode 13h graphics with 256 colours and a 320x200 resolution.

Now this is a "screensaver" as far as I remember, it may have even had the ".scr" extension, it was on one of our really old Windows 95 machines back in the early 90's.

Thanks, figured the name was really basic too but wasn't entirely sure.

The Web Archive has the old glacier point website, showing Nightbird along with their other screensavers,
Sparkwood and Virtual Winter.

Watervision, Impulse, and Liberty Bell weren't screensavers. You started them manually.

At one point I had them working in DOSBox, though I don't remember if I'd installed Windows 3.1 inside DOSBox or not.
They weren't 100% working in DOSBox -- had some issue changing the options for the screensaver (number of birds, viewing angle, that sort of thing).

Works fine for me, using the "4.0" version.

Interesting there's a source code download (though for a "earlier version" only), does anybody know if the guy who made this is still around? It would be fun to make a "modern" version that runs natively on today’s systems. (Most likely will target OpenGL)

Oh that was a screen saver ? 😮
When I did my DESQView video, I thought it was some oddity.
That thing almost made it into my video (it didn't run properly in DESQView, so I left it out).

Edit: I took a video for you. ^^
It's available at http://youtu.be/S_xu87gb15E
