My son's getting an RTX 2060 for his birthday, so I've been benchmarking my graphics cards as I have time. So far I've benchmarked my old card (GTX 750Ti) and my current card (GTX 1650 Super). Early tomorrow morning I'll benchmark the RTX2060 in my system, then when we put it in his system, I'll put his old card (GTX 1060 6GB) in my system for a 4 card comparison. It'll be interesting to see how this bunch does on an older platform (i5-4590).

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Did you get it for Ray tracing? Cuz i thought the equivalent 20 series compared to 10 series was not that much of a jump.

He is a graphics snob. The GTX 1060 can't maintain 1080p 60fps on the highest graphics settings on a lot of the modern titles coming out. The RTX 2060 is 40-50% faster plus supports ray tracing. I got the EVGA RTX 2060 KO for $300, which is my max budget for a graphics card, so it was really the best option in my budget. I could've gotten an RX 5600 XT (the only other card that competes at that price range) but no ray tracing support and he's more of an Nvidia fan anyway.

Here's an example of some of the differences between the cards at 1080p Ultra/Max settings:

Here's a sneak peak of how the RTX2060 compares to the GTX1650 Super and GTX750Ti in my i5-4590 at 1080p:

Furmark GPU Stress Test Power Consumption at the wall
RTX2060: 218 W
GTX1650 S: 144 W
GTX750Ti: 118 W

Timespy GPU Score
RTX2060: 7272
GTX1650 S: 4580
GTX750Ti: 1284

Firestrike GPU Score
RTX2060: 18726
GTX1650 S: 11571
GTX750Ti: 4458

GTA V Ultra/Max/4x MSAA Average FPS
RTX2060: 91.2 fps
GTX1650 S: 68.7 fps
GTX750Ti: N/A (not enough VRAM)
(if I turn off MSAA and drop three detail settings from Ultra to Very High, the 750Ti can run the benchmark at 52 fps. The 1650S gets 105.2 and the RTX2060 gets 113.9 with the same settings.)

Final Fantasy XIV Max Setting Average FPS
RTX2060: 96.0
GTX1650 S: 75.6
GTX750Ti: 31.1

I'll also be testing Final Fantasy XV and the new System Shock Alpha demo. Will add 1060 6GB results when that card becomes available.

I would not be comfortable running the RTX2060 in my system as a daily driver. When pushing both the CPU and GPU, I've seen total system power approach 270 W and I only have a 320 W PSU (it's not upgradable).

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Thanks for that . The power draw on those RTX cards is quite intense . The TDP delta between the GTX 750 Ti and RTX 2060 is 100W and your real-world test reflects that pretty closely .

replaced the 60GB SSD in my ipfire firewall with a 128GB HP S700 Pro. The 60GB (an old OCZ Vertex 3) still has plenty of life left in it, so I'll convert it into the boot drive of my Ubuntu Server file server. You'll laugh: the current boot drive in that Core2Quad system is a 74GB Western Digital Raptor (2nd gen). That beast is still going strong with 83896 POH.

Bought a 480GB SSD to replace a faulty 1TB HDD external drive. Should arrive next week or two weeks (*rolleyes*).

Is writing this considered retro activity or modern activity? The game is retro but the system is modern.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Can be either or.

Dusted out my brother's computer 2 days ago as there was so much dust in the system it would shut off after 5 minutes. Whole lotta dust in the CPU heatsink, in the PSU, motherboard, case, cards, you name it and using the shop vac as the blower worked out rather nicely. And it runs again.

Edit: 7-27-2020 @ 2:33AM: attempted to use the 120GB SSD to test out the Inspiron 1525 to see if it detects it, and it didn't at all since the drive compared to the HDD looked correct length, but the power and data connectors didn't get seated in. Inserted it into the Inspiron 6400/E1505 laptop and that detects it without issues. So apparently, the HDD bracket for the 1525 has a major design flaw that doesn't like SSDs for some reason and Dell's engineering is crap. Also had to fix the wireless card as one of the antenna connections slipped off and let go (connection either worked for a minute then dropped out completely or wouldn't connect to anything).

Got the keyboard done for my Amiga 2000. It is a modern USB keyboard with WASD keycaps. I'm using a CIA-->USB adapter inside the A2000 which goes to a USB PCI bracket in the rear of the case. The keyboard has Gateron MX Brown switches.

Finally got my new Ryzen system built. This is basically my first build with "modern" parts as when I started this
hobby it was all retro or nothing. Cable management was a chore, lesson learnt is don't skimp on the case which
I did and paid for it in spades. See the before/after shots I didn't do too bad though not near the level some of you
out there. The gpu I did skimp on intentionally since it's all I had on hand plus wanted to wait and see what the next
line up of nvidia/radeon cards look like in a few months. It's very hard to wait though, want to jump on a 2070 Super.

Here are the specs. so far:

Case: Corsair Carbide Spec-01 (got it really for having the optical drive option, wish I hadn't now)
CPU: Ryzen 3700x
Mobo: MSI MPG x570 Gaming Pro Carbon WiFi
Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB 3600mhz ddr4
GPU: EVGA 1050ti 4gb (don't laugh! plan to upgrade later. Nvidia gpu's not cheap!)
Boot Drive: WD SN750 Black 1TB M.2 NvMe
Hard Drive: Crucial 480GB SATA
PSU: Corsair CX650M
System Fans: Corsair SP120 Pro RGB 3-pack

Looks good to me nice job! What about the case isn't good?

Thanks! The case doesn't have a lot of options for cable mgmt. like extra cut-outs and etc.
Made it harder on myself getting that (3) pack of corsair fans with a control hub, just another
mass of cables to deal with. Looks pretty though.

So I managed to get productively bored earlier while listening to lectures that ultimately were just the professor reading the syllabus.

I decided that my second, three screw copy of Top Gun would be a nice external case for a free floating 320GB SATA drive. A lot of filing and compressed air later, and it looks pretty damn good both on and in the case. I kept the SATA ports close to the bottom of the cartridge because I use this tiny USB adapter for a bunch of drives, so having it free to pull out is a lot more important to me than having an aesthetically better project. Also, before anyone complains about me destroying a case, the game sold over two million copies, and is just an average as all hell three screw version. Nobody is going to miss it.

I also spent the time getting it to have icons in both MacOS and PC OSes, which was a fun ordeal. Why Apple needs to have two sets of icons for retina and non-retina displays labeled so specifically is beyond me, though.

Swapped cases for my modern system to a smaller case until I can get a new one for the system to make it look nicer.

The cable management is better than before as sometimes, one of the fan power cables would get too close into contact with the CPU fan.

Writing and recording music on the new iMac and on my phone on BandLab, then posting on Instagram and Youtube. Been taking a break from the retro stuff for a little bit.....got something about to happen soon though on the retro front that is quasi modern - 128GB mSATA SSD on a NEC Versa via Sata to 44pin PATA adapter.
