I Broke A Vintage Floppy Drive Motor

My Commodore 8050 drive died two months ago, while being attached to a IEEE-USB interface. It seems the read-head of drive 0 was driven too far. After fixing that issue, I noticed that drive 1 wasn’t formatting disks — again. Suspecting that the DC motor for the drive might have an issue, I wanted to open it up to do maintenance. A bad decision…

I read the description of this video and it made me sad enough to not want to watch it.. 🤣! I'll watch it tonight on the way home I think. Cheers!

It has a happy end. 😁 But I learned what NOT to do, without really proper equipment like mechanical tools...

ZoomFloppy+OpenCBM+8050

The main issue with the Commodore 8050 and 8250 drives is: How do you get data onto them? The units use 100tpi floppy drives that are incompatible to the regular 48tpi and 96tpi disk drives used in the 1541 and in PC DD and HD drives. So there is no chance using those. However there is the ZoomFloppy, which is an implementation of the XUM1541 interface and it comes with an optional IEE488 plug! We can attach the 8050 to that, and use the OpenCBM tools to read and write data to and from the floppies.

Let's Code MS DOS 0x26: AdLib Drum Machine

Programming the OPL2 FM chip on the original AdLib card can be a bit tedious. Join me in this episode to learn how to program the drums on the AdLib card to create a simple sequencer or drum machine. In the future we will also look at the melodic instruments, but for now we try to create some nice percussion!

And the second installment is here:

Let's Code MS DOS 0x27: AdLib OPL2 Melodic Programming

We continue our quest to learn the secrets of the AdLib sound card and its Yamaha OPL2 FM synthesizer. Last time we did the drum programming, but this time we learn how to code melodic instruments and how to play notes.

Let's Code MS DOS 0x28: Expanded Memory (EMS)

The original IBM PC and MS DOS could — for the most part — only access 640KB of memory. The LIM EMS standard was at first a standard for RAM expansion cards to overcome this limit. On later machines like the 286 and 386 there was either support built into the chipsets or EMS memory was emulated via drivers like EMM386. Today we learn how to utilize EMS memory to play back an animation that is too large for conventional memory.

Following the success of my "additive soundtrack" of Dune (Cryo) in 2015, I follow it up with a 5-device combined version of Westwood's Dune 2 for your listening pleasure.
It's an additive version combining the sounds of PC Speaker, Tandy 3-voice, AdLib, Roland MT-32 and SC-55 all in one, so you get the best of all the versions, and some kind of "orchestra" rendition that makes the music really pop.

Hi,

This is my retro flight sim channel https://www.youtube.com/@darkenedroom

There are some showcase playlists to show off optimised emulation settings for particular games (very subjective I know) and links on the vids to various blog posts which can be found on my website here: https://www.tales-from-darkenedroom.com/
