Fairly interesting: "The Acting Register found that the record supported granting an expansion in the relatively discrete circumstances where a preservation institution legally possesses a copy of a video game's server code and the game's local code," the Librarian of Congress said. "In such circumstances, the preservation activities described by proponents are likely to be fair uses."

Clearly this is for preservation but it is good to see this kind of wording.

"from electronic aircraft controls to farm equipment diagnostic software" Sounds connected to Right to Repair which is also a good thing.

Was sad to see isozone closed down last month due to pressure. I had a side project of backing up as many xbox games as I could successfully test on my own xbox. and it was a genuine if 1/2 hearted attempt to archive not pirate. over 50% of the games I have no desire to play, Barbie Horse Adventures....yay! but the xbox was part of my past.

Don't worry I'm sure a constantly shifting small percentage will be playable via bandwidth consuming and interermittent connectivity streaming via subscription fairly soon.

Think someone out there needs to do us a solid and setup a botnet to calculate bitcoin to also play these streaming games so they show up as always played and the companies never pull them. I say us but as I've said in the past I'll never play a streaming game until the experience is exactly the same or better than local gameplay with no additional downsides so likely never or long after I'm dead.

Others elsewhere have already pointed this out but legally possessing server and game code requires someone to legally grant that code. Ideally this would be mandated but it will never be and devs and publishers are lazy and cheap. I also doubt a preservation institution is going to do anything but hold on to the code for study. Setting up game servers for all these different games and expecting them to maintain them isn't realistic but mabye the Internet Archive can find another loophole.
