Basically I wanted to show everyone my new netbook...

I bought a new Netbook to replace my old one. The old one is a Linx 1010b. It's a tablet with detachable keyboard, touch screen but full Windows 10 kind of thing. When it was new, it cost £160 or so four years ago.

It has an Atom Z3725f <1.6GHz 4c4t ~6Watts (quite good for the time for the price!)
10.1" touchscreen
2GB RAM
32GB eMMC + Memory Card Slot
Windows 10 x86 (can't install anything newer than 1803)

it has the Intel Graphics problem of DX7 and DX8 games only showing 2/3 of the screen. It isn't really powerful enough for DX9 and some DX8 games. I'm actually CPU limited in some mid XP era games that are hoping for a fast single core chip, but mostly GPU limited in older games. Not to mention, the keyboard/screen connector was broken so it would disconnect the keyboard at the slightest pressure. It's still quite a useful device as a tablet though.

I've replaced it with an Acer Travel Mate B118-M. It's a proper netbook, no touch screen or auto-rotate gyros etc. This has:
Pentium Silver N5000 <2.6GHz ~6watts
4GB RAM
64GB eMMC + M.2 slot + Memory Card Slot
Windows 10 x64

Good news - DX7 and 8 games work full screen with this chip (the N5000 has Intel UHD 605 graphics) and the August 2019 drivers! This problem was the bane of my portable retro gaming existence for years.

Intel graphics software, now called something different and not appearing on your right click menu, (still?) lets you set 4:3 resolutions to fill the screen vertically whilst maintaining the aspect ratio which is nice. The netbook is actually also now usable in Windows 10 now too.

But is it actually any faster than my old thing:

3DMark 2001
Linx 6,687
Acer 11,759

3DMark 2003
Linx 4,641
Acer 6947

Quake 3
Linx 126FPS
Acer 207FPS

Morrowind 1024*768(view as you exit the ship on arrival)0
Linx 20
Acer 40

Just Cause 2 640*400
Linx Desert 27fps / City 16fps
Acer 46 / 32

Doom 3 800 * 600 Low
Linx 14
Acer 36

I'll call this a (not unexpected) result then! This is why I like super low power kit; there are still big improvements coming forward!

I found that you could spend more money at a mainstream retail chain or online (in the UK that's called Currys PC World) and get a significantly worse spec; some £250+ machines were using N4000 or N4100 CPUs are only 2c2t parts, plus only 32GB of storage, and you need to avoid Windows 10 S and Chromebooks. I mean, I guess I am the odd one out that I will be retro gaming on it, as it really isn't what they are made for!

It's also a very new model, so new in fact that doesn't seem to exist on the Acer support page which is encouraging but is generically listed on their website. I can't find out what sort of M.2 Slot (hopefully a standard 2280) it has until I dig out my small screwdriver (i'm moving house and my toolkit is at my other house). I'm tempted to stick in a 120GB drive for £20 for game storage which should be fine for DVD sized games, or maybe a 250GB drive and bypass the built in eMMC storage altogether, which appears to be an option in the BIOS.

I missed a number of crazy deals last years where one can get 14 inch FHD Core i3-8130 and Ryzen 2500U at $299. Nowadays, Amazon Renewed has a number of good 13.3 and 12.5 FHD laptops with Core m3-6Y30. Nevertheless, some of them are Chromebooks. The Ryzen APU, Core i3-8000 series and Core m3 6Y30 are much, much more powerful than Celeron N and Pentium N based laptops.
