This is a public notice to all users that on 22 Nov 2004 at 12:12 GMT the "howdark.com" exploit was used to plant files on the server. The exploit file was executed on this server and the attackers may have gained access to files or data available under the "vogons" gid. I believe that have determined what all of the attacker's accesses were, and none appear to be related to the divulgence of sensitive data; the attacker appears to have been wanting to set up a zombie box. As a precaution, server passwords have been changed. Logfiles have been forwarded to the ISP for further examination and possible legal action. I sincerely apologize for my inaction which allowed this to occur.
