I experimented with Hammer Editor for Half-Life 2 a few years back but never did something more than test maps

I used to play with worldcraft which i think became hammer, they look the same

i tried again recently and have clearly forgotten everything 🙁

i'd guess that HL2 editing is still more complex - or at least has that many more options to consider in a map

Yeah, it was hard 😅

I used to watch this guy to learn how to create Source maps: I found his videos pretty straightforward.

I once tried my hand at worldcraft back in the day and it felt more difficult than I thought making a game would be..

Thought I already replied to this?

Anyway - summer 2007, when my laptop would alternate between Lunar Magic (the Super Mario World editor), Openoffice Draw (the beach marble track editor), pre-downloaded websites, and magazine CDs 😁
A friend of mine, then a big Blizzard fan and collaborator on the above projects, brought some CD game (Warcraft 3, possibly?) and yes we went for the editor, but it was slow and we gave up after maybe 20 minutes...

Best design "game" (as in, activity primarily for recreational value) of this kind was however a promotional furniture-placing CAD that Ikea gave away in 2003 though!

I spent quite a lot of time building Duke3D maps, eventually I even bought a physical book on it (which I've still got). It was great that the game came with its tools on the cd: the map editor, tools to mess with the art, etc. I also made mods for myself (such as, of course, importing Doom sprites), same with Quake. However trying to build maps for true 3d games just wasn't as much fun to me, much steeper learning curve than the 2.5 games and after a while it was just hard to make out what you were looking at in the editor.

I had a book as well. I wonder if it was the same one 🤣

I spent WAY too much time with Duke 3D and later Qoole. I finally had to remove it all and say no more.

I've heard of people uninstalling mmorpg games, cancelling online membership/payment for games and the like because they were taking up too much time and/or absorbing too much resource - but not doing so due to making maps in duke3d 😀

i guess it can become addictive but it is a creative outlet too

The Deus AI room, homage to one of the last scenes of the Israeli TV show: Deus in 2008-2010. The Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

A gameplay inside brushworking update to this map, now equale and decent gameplay, two corners downs and ups, on those closets. Enjoy.

It is and it is 😊

I think making mods may actually be my biggest pastime when behind a PC nowadays and is definitely demanding on your creativity, not only artistically but also when it comes to troubleshooting a mod.
Sometimes I think my main hobby may actually be 2 things: Troubleshooting and problemsolving 😋 since I see these usually come up in something that is a new interest.

One way I save time is to accept that I will never be able to complete all of my projects. I have more ideas than I have time to make them.

that's the thing, once you start problem solving you encounter or create new challenges and thinking up new things, in map making often adding new features and so on
