While this was a group of publishers suing over books, hopefully it's not a first crack in the wall 🙁

A federal judge has ruled in favor of a group of book publishers who sued the nonprofit Internet Archive for scanning and lending digital copies of copyrighted books in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

The four publishing houses — Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, John Wiley & Sons and Penguin Random House — accused the Internet Archive of "mass copyright infringement" for loaning out digital copies of books without the publishers' permission.

At issue is the National Emergency Library, a temporary online collection established in 2020 that lent digital books while brick-and-mortar libraries were closed during COVID-19 lockdowns. It operated from March 24 to June 16 of that year.

Well regardless of this particular lawsuit the IA has become a "dump everything you've got to this free file hoster" so I'm sure more will follow as there seems to be no content filtering at all.

Scan all you want but if you share it out you need to comply with the law or get it changed it before commiting the crime otherwise you'll get into trouble.
IA needs to spot spouting BS, they are only hurting themselves. Seriously every time I read their posts or responses it's like hearing from a salesperson, influencer or faux news.

Always seemed pretty flimsy to me:
"Access to the Archive’s Collections is provided at no cost to you and is granted for scholarship and research purposes only."
"The Internet Archive (the "Archive") is committed to making its constantly growing collection of Web pages and other forms of digital content (the "Collections") freely available to researchers, historians, scholars, and others ("Researchers") for purposes of benefit to the public. "

there is a risk that all the good things there will be threatened by all the misuse of ia. ia wont have the means to identify and block content, there is too much of it - so the options are either to give up completely, implement a system of uploads only for confirmed legal things (and lose anything not so confirmed) or implement some clumsy blocking 'automation' which makes a mess of the whole place

A few days ago, I downloaded a PDF from the IA which was identified by Microsoft Defender as a trojan and autodeleted.

How can a PDF contain a virus? Is this a new thing? (I downloaded the file a second time an hour later, and now there was no virus.)

This was a day before Linus Tech Tips got hacked, which was also apparently due to a PDF virus.

Is this too much voodoo?

These two Videos explain it in detail, its not a PDF at all but a screen saver which as far as windows is concerned is actually an executable and treated as such.

Security holes in Adobe Acrobat aren't a new thing, there were some issues where true PDF files were dangerous.

Nie tylko, jak widzicie, w tym trudność, że nie zdołacie wejść na moją górę, lecz i w tym, że ja do was cały zejść nie mogę, gdyż schodząc, gubię po drodze to, co miałem donieść.

IIRC I think MS patched that internally in windows. I might be wrong on that and Adobe patched it.
