In a 1999 interview, John Carmack mentioned that he was developing on Windows NT 4.0:

In the book "Game Engine Black Book DOOM" you can read that Doom was developed under NextStep on a Next Station.
Quake was released in June 1996, one month before the release of Windows NT 4.0. Windows NT 4.0 was the first WinNT version to support DirectX. Windows NT 4.0 was also the first version in which the graphics subsystem ran in kernel mode.
But OpenGL was already available in Windows NT 3.5. Windows NT 3.5 was released in September 1994, Windows NT 3.51 in May 1995 and Windows 95 was available from August 1995.
The question therefore arises as to whether John Carmack was already using a version of Windows NT before Windows NT 4.0 while developing Quake or whether he switched directly to Windows NT 4.0 from NextStep? And if so, which version of Windows NT was it? Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51? Or was Windows NT 3.1 already used?
