I couldn't find a reliable download for 1.72 (I'm not downloading something from a site called Download3K), but 1.63 seems to work fine.

Are you copying the correct dll files in the game directory? are you copying dgVoodoo.conf in the game directory (and then not altering the configuration; try with safe defaults first)?

That site is fine, I downloaded many demo games from there.

Of course I copied everything to the game directory. But I had the game unpacked and started it from drive D: \.

After you confirmed that it works I installed it in C: \ Program Files (x86) and it really works without problems.
