I'm trying to play Tie Fighter on my 486.. everything works fine up until I go into "Enter Mission"... then I get a black screen any nothing more happens.

The intro plays just fine with sound and music. I am able to go around in the "base", but as soon as I enter any kind of mission (same in training/simulator room) I get black screen.

I am using:
486 DX2-66
Tseng ET4000 (VLB)
SB16 CT2290

Have tried disabling all sound and different speed settings in setup, but no luck.
How do I troubleshoot this?

Yes, I have run setup.
Both sound and music plays fine in other parts.
I have also tried disabling sound completely

Does the same thing happen in X-Wing?

Which version of TF is this? If it's the later one with hires support, try lowering it back down.

Interesting. How do I do that in Dos? Don't see any options for that in setup...

No idea, sorry, I don't own that version. I only saw Wikipedia claim it's optional, so there's gotta be a way somewhere.

I see... I believe this is the first version, with VGA only, and no such setting.
Thanks anyway!

The graphic card is a Tseng ET4000/W32i (VLB), could it be a compability issue?
I believe these cards has very high compability with DOS games, right?
Are there any graphic card tweaks available for DOS gaming?

It could be a VESA VBE issue. You could look for a Tseng VBE TSR or try UniVBE. TIE Fighter might already be loading a version of UniVBE. The game may also have compatibility options for VGA modes. Maybe command line options. Check the readme.

And you could look for the DOS CD version of TIE Fighter which has the SVGA mode and maybe additional compatibility tweaks, and includes both expansion packs.
