Hi!

Here is my specs.

Win98se all updates +sp3.
40gb ide hdd
Asus 5232as cd rom.
Geforce 4 ti4600 45.23
512mb ram
PIII 933mhz
Intel 815eea2 mobo.
Aureal vortex 2 (xitel storm platinum)
2048 reference driver.

Version of the game is
Retail cdrom with patch 1.01 installed.

First of all i want to know if Dark forces 2 has cd music in all its levels?

Here is where i have music and not.

Lvl1 double cross on nar shaddaa = music
Lvl 2 the lost disk = music
Lvl3 return to home sulon = music
Lvl4 the jedis lightsaber = no music
Lvl5 barons hed the fallen city = music
Lvl6 into the dark palace = no music
Lvl7 the dark youth = no music
Lvl8 palace escape = no music

Well this is as far as i have gotten into the game right now.

In playthroughs on youtube all levels seem to have music.
Is this due to a music wrapper being used on modern hardware or is there actually something wrong with my setup?

I tried using 2 other drives in the pc a Lite-on cdrom and a philips dvd drive but that did not change a thing.

I have also tried the game with an Audigy 1 card and no luck there either.

All other games work fine with cd audio.

I'm not sure what issue is. I checked some of the levels that you stated had no music with my CD copy. The music worked just fine for me. However I did come across an issue where when I quit the game, it throws up an error message.

my specs

Win98se no updates
40gb ide hdd
some LG 40x cdrom
Ati Rage Pro turbo
Voodoo 2 (The Voodoo 2 is what the game actually used) latest driver
384mb of ram
PIII 850mhz
Tyan Trinity 400 with v443 VIA chipset
Sound Blaster Live

Any problems playing the CD tracks through the same drive using DAE or CD audio in?

Sorry but what is DAE?

When you say cd audio in you mean the 3.5mm jack on the front of the drive?

I use a internal analogue cd audio cable from the vortex to the cd drive.

Also i have two copies of the game and one of them is new without a single scratch.

Oh yeah i use the toslink on the soundcard for digital out to my reciever.

The first time i encountered this problem i could not het any music in the game exept the first level.

I reinstalled Win98se and installed the game again and got the result i mention in my first post.

So strange.. someone mentioned something about memory of the cdrom drives. Also another person asked about wich Dos cdrom drivers i have installed..

This really bothers me as one of the reasons i built this was to experience Dark Forces 2 again on old hardware as i remember it.

I felt there was something wrong here.

Digital Audio Extraction. If you have the WDM (Windows Device Model) drivers installed for your sound card in Windows 98SE (versus the old format of drivers that I forget the name of), Windows will effectively rip the audio from the CD while whatever software that is using the CD drive is accessing the CD to play music, using the IDE cable and bypassing the analog CD audio cable. Global digital audio extraction first appeared in Windows 98, and much more hardware support was available in Windows 98SE.

I'm not sure it matters or not, but what drivers are you using for the vortex?

Intresting information.

I have an analogue cable going from my Xitel storn platinum (vortex 2) soundcard.

I cant enable digital audio in the box in multimedia/cdrom when using the vortex card.

With the Auidgy 1 i could enable digital sound there.

Btw i tried playing the jedi knight cd1 in windows cd player and it plays but i hear no music at all.

As i mentioned before i use the digital toslink on the Xitel (vortex 2) soundcard and it works great in all other games i have tried so far.

Games like
Heretic II
Quake II
Chasm the rift
Exhumed (aka powerslave)
Cyclones

All of these use cd audio and works perfectly all the way to the end.

Can you play a regular audio CD from the CD-ROM?

I tried to play the jedi knight cd1 in windows cd player and the tracks run but i get no sound.

I will soon replace this motherboard with a Asus Tusl-c 1.04 and a 1.4ghz tualatin.
Still it would be nice to find a solution to this.

Does playback work for normal audio CDs as opposed to mixed mode (or just these two mixed mode disks) using the Windows CD player?
Does installing an analog CD audio cable change anything?

Well the thing is... i have an analogue cd cable going from the vortex to the cdrom.

Two days ago i replaced the motherboard with a Asus tusl2-c rev 1.04
Paired it with a 1.4ghz tualation.

Everything else is the same.

Now i get music from the jedi knight cd1 in windows cdplayer.

Still no change ingame on the affected levels.

I think i am going to unplug the cd cable.

Before that i will find some normal music cds to try out.

Ok so windows can play normal music cds and game cds containing rebook audio.

Tried to unplug the analogue 3pin cd cable to my vortex 2.
After that i tried to enable digital cd audio but the vortex 2 has vxd drivers so that option is not available.

Installed Jedi knight on a third system.

P4 3ghz prescott.
Asus P4c800e-deluxe (intel 875 based)
X2 256 pc3200 ddr dual channel
Win98se sp3
Vortex 2
Gf4 ti4600
500gb sata (80gb partition used)

And behold!
The same problem exist!

I guess i will have to replace the vortex 2 with a sb live and se if it solves the problem.

This will just be temporary though as i cant live without my Vortex 2 for to long 😉
