How to troubleshoot slow Win98SE boot?

I have freshly installed Win98SE on:

ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe
ATI 9800 PRO
Ensoniq AudioPCI
1 GB RAM - enabled through MaxFileCache=512000

Booting to Win98 takes 1 minute or more.
Booting in Safe mode takes 5 seconds
Booting to WinXP on separate partition takes 15 seconds

I tried to do the selective startup where I have to OK every startup item, after I clear the last one: msmouse.vxd the system just hangs, no HDD activity and then minute later it loads.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this and find out what is slowing things down?

Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k, 48k+, 128k, +2
Amiga 1200, 68030/40mhz
386DX/33, ET4000, SBPro2, MT32
Dual PPro/200, Millennium II, Voodoo 2, AWE32, SC-55

Could be the network card is waiting for a reply from a DHCP server. Try disabling the network card or setting a fixed IP address in Windows.

That was it, thanks a lot Cyrix200+. I disable NIC in BIOS and Win98 booted in 5 seconds. Now need to figure out how to keep it enabled in BIOS, and make Win98 not hang when not connected to LAN - the PC is not on LAN right now.
