Tried the 2016 steam install succesfully! thanks for the share, can't locate the 2014 one at all, could a link be posted please? 😀
Edit:
Looking through my own backups I've found a backup of steam from 10/09/2013. Going to see how this one does for full functionality 😀

Oh, that's great 😀 if it works, you can send me a copy of C:\Steam\Package folder, so I could prepare a clean install by extracting those files (you can do it by yourself if you wish, i posted a description how to do it).
I can upload 2015 version (it has working Steam Browser), but I am not sure about uploading 2014 version, I used filewatcher.com and www.mmnt.ru/int/ to find it, and i found it on a FTP server with a lot of games and stuff, so I am not sure if it is 100% virus clean (I extracted it from the package files, so in theory it should be clean, but I'm cautious). 2016 and 2015 versions come from my personal computers and are 100% clean.

Brilliant. I've packaged up the package files https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2wro3G-6SYp … iew?usp=sharing Hopefully they are useful. I haven't actually got around to testing on my own pc but as its my own backup I have no doubt it will work well 😀 I was a bit confuddled by the instructions to use the original package files so would it be possible to get a working install back? Thanks

Edit:

Took a deep breath and did it slowly, managed to get a fresh 2013 install from my packages, Huzzah! 😀

why you run Steam on a P3 system? 😕

for old games, it's preferible to use GoG Galaxy

Funny because you have to patch GOG Galaxy to run on XP.

For old games just run the damn games instead of using shitty launchers.

A viewer told me he just installed Steam on a Pentium 3? Can anyone confirm or has seen a change log?

I just hooked up my vintage Windows XP system and re-installed Steam from the website installer and it's working now. In fact, I'm currently copying games that SHOULD work on this system over from my main gaming rig. These games include all the old Star Wars games like Jedi Knight, Half-Life: Source, Half-Life 2 and the two Episodes, Counter-Strike: Source, etc.

Ok, so yay...Steam works again (browser does not). But I can't get Half-Life 2, Half-Life: Source, or any related game to run due to the infamous "unable to load DLL FileSystem_Stdio.dll" error, which I have been unable to resolve. But my Star Wars games pretty much all run.

they even added SSE2 requiremend to games...
some older games running on P3 without problems are no longer working because they now require SSE2..

Dunno why they made SSE2 a requirement if the original games didn't need it. Modern computers are so fantastically powerful compared to old hardware, you'd think they didn't need SSE2.

They were done perfectly fine in the original version of the game without SSE2. What I'm saying is why are the game coders saying "F*** people with older systems!"?

Because the people who play the old games with Steam on old systems are far outnumbered by people playing them on modern systems, and these optimizations and changes can improve the experience for them.

There is also a Steam.cfg file that disables updates.

Original package files are still included, so you can do that trick yourself, if you wish.

Sorry to necro, but if possible could somebody reupload this? I'm having no luck with the archive.org 2018 Steam build nor the latest on my P3 system.

EDIT: For anyone in the future, you can simply download the package.7z above and extract Steam.exe from it (within steam_win32.zip, just remove the last extension after .zip). You can then put all of the packages into the package/ folder along with the manifest (with extension removed).

However, it seems this version has problems connecting to Steam servers. Any luck anyone?

I don't think that any XP compatible Steam version will work anymore. 🙁

It turns out the packages above are from 2013. I know that at least the Nov. 2018 build will still work (if you have SSE2) and connect, but I need a copy of a 2016 build to try.

EDIT: So it seems that the November build works fine on systems with SSE only, however I am experiencing the issues that others are with logging in to Steam through it. However, current SteamLiteXP builds seem to require SSE2...

EDIT 2: The Steam build from 2014 in the reviews here https://archive.org/details/steam_201901 is able to login but not download any games (content servers unreachable).

EDIT 3: Got Steam working (though games must be downloaded and copied over from elsewhere): Re: Steam and XP

Just for the record, the last Steam XP client works perfectly as of January 2022, connects to Steam just fine and downloads games without a hiccup. No need to play with emulators / proxies.

this guide works currently (until Valve breaks something on their side) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-FbdgMar7Q

Now, it would be great to have a working windows 98 Steam client 😁
