Tried pressing random keys?
Tried looking through ini files for references to keybindings?

I'll go see if I can find anything. I don't have that actual game though so not sure how much I can do.

Does pressing the "pause" key work? (lol)

Yes.

Yes. No Luck, the .cfg have the cd path and the sound enable flag only.

No.

P.S. I have seen the pause mode in this walkthrough. EI cheats reference the pause mode too ("cheats not work in the pause mode").

It's a bit of a long shot (and I don't remember very well anymore) but in the past I've looked through the exes of games as these may contain configuration file names (possibly along with some settings).

Even googling these file names may result in something substantial and sometimes the same (or similar) filenames were used across multiple games of the same developer. You could also open up the editor in a reader like notepad++ and search for strings that have words in them like "pause", but again this is a long shot and it may end up eating lots of time without any substantial results.
