Hi guys i am new here, the names Dane and i am hoping you folks can help. Recently i built a retro rig running a Pentium III 800mhz cpu , around 326 mb or ram and a radeon 9550 agp gfx card with 128 vram. The hard drive is an 89 gig ide drive. So my issue is this both windows 98SE and windows ME install fine, i install all drivers everything is working even my usb headset, however the mouse lags like crazy especially if i try to install something or if im extracting an archive, its as if the entire computer slows to a crawl when in operation with a task, strangely games work find with no lag at all only when im in desktop view doing desktop things or when running my old version of firefox to download patches etc.

Even more strange is the fact that the system runs perfect on windows 2000 and XP so I am really at a loss as to what is causing the slowdowns, it has been around 16 years since i last used this older tech and os's so any help would be appreciated thanks.

So just read up on that setting doesn't look like my hard drive has the ability to enable it sadly , is there any other options ? Or if not can you guys recommend a good hard drive mak with ideally the model

What motherboard do you have?
P3 and a 80GB hard drive are both well into when DMA was common.
Also your not using a IDE to SATA adaptor are you, some of those don't allow DMA?

Install the Intel INF v3.20.1008 chipset drivers (infinst_enu.exe). Check the readme.txt before installing.

Intel Application Accelerator (iaa23_multi.exe) (iaa23_enu.exe)
If you're using an Intel i810 or i815, you may get some performance improvement by installing the Intel Application Accelerator v2.3. Then again, this might cause problems. Make sure you want this before you install it, because uninstallation can be troublesome and maybe even impossible. Definitely check the readme.txt before installing.

NOTE: v2.2.2 was the last version for mobile processors.

Reboot twice after installing either or both of the above.

Check that DMA is enabled for your drives thus:

Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Disk Drives

Go into Properties for each hard drive and then into the Settings tab. There should be a check box available for DMA. Check it and reboot. You can also do this for your optical drives.

Note: If you're using a PCI IDE or SATA controller, you may not be able to do this. I run a Promise Ultra 133 TX2 IDE controller in two of my 440BX PCs. Devices attached to the onboard controller have the option to enable DMA. Devices attached to the Promise controller do not.
