After using the newest unofficial service pack for Windows 98SE and encountering funky stuff that should not be happening, such as file browser issues and other weird things, I have decided to use something else.

I think I used to use this pack back in the day:

That should get me everything that was official from MS as well as a few other added things but nothing like what the abomination that this is:

I looked at the packs on Majorgeeks, but they look like they possibly have a bunch of unwanted stuff and are not very specific on what is included.

What is the consensus on the Auto-Patcher for Windows 98SE?

Here is a list of all the official updates:

edit:
Here is a page that has a bunch of different things including what looks like a pack that only has the official updates.

It contains mostly just the official updates.

I found the offline installer the other day(along with a lot of other things) at http://www.tmeeco.eu/9X4EVER/GOODIES/ .

I usually go with vanilla nowdays and just skip the unofficial SPs, there is no real need to apply patches to win9x anymore and as you I found they sometimes makes stuff "funky". I can recommend you go through http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE and download some of those patches for stability, not all of them, but the stuff you think you will need.

Probably the most important thing is that if you install IE6SP1 (which still seems like a pretty good idea, I think), you will want the shell fix that uses two files from IE5.5.
