Btw. this russian? converter tool is nice, but it has no option for changing the palette, it seems only support the standard-cga-palette.

Hi Doc, thanks for the program! I wrote a little utility for you, CGAView. Maybe it is somehow useful to you.
It is fairly simple and supports displaying the alternate palette, too. And any XT machine with CGA.
But for some reason, it doesn't like all images. In this case, it might be necessary to
add a frame (or a thin line at the top and the bottom) to the images to fix that.
So don't expect too much, it is clearly horrific designed and still a work-in-progress. 😅
Edit: Adding a 28pix wide, non-black (cyan) coloured line to the first row seems to fix the issue, too.
Edit: MGAView, a similar tool for MGA (Hercules) is available in OldCat's thread over here.

thx! I'll try it. The "more color" mode in calgames is really intersting because it's rgb-cga. Is there another game that uses it?
I tested some "tandy-related" stuff on my schneider euro pc with 1084 (CGA) and some textmode-things really work.
I will share it with you soon.

i believe Frogger also uses similar but more simpler trick.
It change the background color into Light Blue on top-half scan, and then to black on lower-half scan. So you have 5 colors (Black-Green-Red-Brown-Light Blue) within 320x200 CGA graphics mode.

changing the background-color is a nice trick. I think they did the rasterbars in the cgademo (codeblaster) with this trick. Very clever and really nice for cga.

Ok, take your time. I'm open to any(ones) suggestions also. Currently, it can already show images from the command line, btw.
There, it shows the pictures created by the converter program you posted, along with the matching standard palette.

Thx. I'll have to choose the palette before watching (btw. does not in boxer/dosbox on my mac, therefore no test on real hardware yet, but will soon follow).
Is it possible to code the palette/switch to F1-F3 and changing the background with F4 on the fly (wich means while watching the image)?

Not exactly what you asked for, but Great Hierophant made a post on his blog about games using the 16 color modes

Hello and Merry Christmas everyone! 😀

I've found a cute, little GIF picture viewer for CGA systems.
It also can do grayscale and has additional VGA & Hercules support..
File name is "grey15.zip" and can be found here.
The Hercules fans among of you may also have a look at HercView.

So long..

Best regards,
Jo22

PS: I've updated CGAView, too.
I'll add it here, since I'm nolonger allowed to edit my earlier post.
Edit: Second upload (some typos fixed)
Edit: CGAView X v0.3 available in another thread

btw.
I am currently checking some ASCII stuff, mainly old BBS-1K/4K.
If there is no VGA Textmode used it will display correctly on my EuroPC and my T1000 RL/HD.

GLX can also be used on a tandy if you use the cga-patched version and use the setdac utility to get the Tandy-Dac working.
I don't know why, but the tandy-dac is alway better than any other covox.

I am also checking for some ascii/cga/tdy animated (porn) stuff...Ifaik there must be something...if I remember correctly... (mandy?)

I'll bite this bait. 😊

I don't remember any CGA-era porn per se, when I had Hercules, I would dither porn gifs from VGA PCs, but the result would be meh. On early VGA there was type of files called .dl (not dll) which required special dl-viewer and would contain a couple frames of animation looped. With much less volume and processing power needed to decode them than even earliest avi or mpgs, they would usually contain looped porn fragments. Not sure if you ever came (pun not intended) across these?

Yes, 'a friend' told me that he has come across this movie player and this type of file back in the day.
I believe that this may have been the GRASP format: https://www.fileformat.info/format/grasp/egff.htm

Oh, I recall those animation formats...
GRASP ("GRaphic Animation System for Professionals") used *.GL files
DLVIEW used *.DL
Autodesk Animator and 3D Studio used *.FLI and *.FLC

Yep, you are correct. Now, you wouldn't happen to have a couple of .DL files hidden somewhere?...

No, DL-VIEW.EXE apparently needs VGA.
Out of the mentioned animation formats, only GRASP supports CGA, and not all .GL files are playable on CGA.
ftp://ftp.oldskool.org/pub/tvdog/tandy1000/gr … hics/tmovie.zip - this one does work on CGA, but needs Tandy to be fully functional
