The internet is covered in discussions on wolf3d stereo on cards released after sbpro1.0
But what about the other way? Can wolf3d do stereo digitized sounds on an sb2.0?

It should, as the SB16 did not yet exist. But afaik it can only do hard left and hard right anyway.
No.
SB 2.0 does not have ability to play stereo PCM, and, it does not have a mixer to pan sounds between left and right channels.
SB 2.0 is just SB 1.X with enhanced features such as higher sampling rate, autoinit DMA and timestamped MIDI.
You could even upgrade SB 1.X card with a version 2.X DSP.
SB PRO cards (1 and 2) have ability for stereo PCM playback and has a mixer chip.
In fact Wold3D plays mono PCM (not stereo) but uses the mixer to pan the sound between left and right channels.

Ah. So this is why Wolf3D ignores my mixer settings and yells in my ears crazy loud.
Shame on us, doomed from the start
May God have mercy on our dirty little hearts
