Hi all,

I'm building a PIII system with 512MB RAM and an Symbios 22801 SCSI controller.

I have a strange issue with the Windows 98 installer. If I boot direct from the CD and tell it to start setup, everything is fine. However, if I go to the CMD prompt either via CD or boot floppy and run setup from there, it crashes. I think it crashes shortly after the registry scan.

The reason I need to go to the CMD prompt first is that I've discovered that the Symbios 22801 is faulty so I'm going to replace it with an Adaptec 39160, but that needs ASPI drivers loaded from a boot floppy to work properly.

Both the Symbios and Adaptec give the same symptom of the setup program hanging when launched from the CMD prompt.

Any thoughts?

The CD boot loads ASPI drivers in order to access CD-ROM drives.
Perhaps as a side effect, they also init Symbios/Adaptec at the same time.
