Yes, it is just strange, that it won't detect.

did you install it from the cd your trying to get it to recognise ?

Yes, I did install it from the CD. From drive D:.

do you have the 1.1.4 Upgrade ?
try clonyxxl or some other cd checking software ?
try a nocd exe

I cannot run the patch, it says ''The decompression of %s failed. There may not be enough free disk space available in the TEMP directory.'

delete everything in c:\windows\temp
try downloading the patch from a different location
run some disk testing software

I don't recall too many issues with CD detection in the patched 1.1.4 version at least, a very simple check. It does save the source drive letter in the registry.

There's no music if you run it without a CD.

If you have FlexiCD loaded into memory (an application that will allow you to play audio CDs from the Windows 95 desktop) then you will have to exit this application before you will be able to play X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. To exit FlexiCD, locate the CD icon on your task bar (usually next to the clock) right click on it, and select EXIT FLEXICD.

Once FlexiCD is no longer active, the icon should disappear from the task bar. If the icon is still present, with a red line through it, then FlexiCD is still active, and will still cause the problem to occur.

Also, if you are receiving this error while no audio CD player applications are loaded into memory, right-click on the "My Computer" icon in Windows, and select Properties. Go to the PERFORMANCE header here on the System Properties window. If your CD-ROM drive is not using a Windows '95 driver you will see a window listed on the bottom of the screen stating that your CD-ROM drive is "USING MS-DOS COMPATIBILITY MODE FILE SYSTEM."

I'm guessing you wouldn't be running that "FlexiCD" or other audio CD player program, but maybe the suggestion about altering "Performance" settings would help.

Sometimes you get that error if your free hard drive space is too large for the installer to detect. There's a utility called "Philip" that used to be recommended back in the early 2000's for 1990's games where this was an issue.

I don't know how large your drive is, so maybe that isn't the problem, but hard drives were really small back in 1997 which seems to be the year the patch was released.
