I am running MSDOS 7.10 and Windows 98 GUI from here https://web.archive.org/web/20050306014829/ht … dos71/index.htm
I can multitask DOS apps in windows 3.11 GUI but not in Windows 98 GUI. For example, if I have a DOS mp3 player in one window, as long as I click outside that DOS window it will "freeze", only to keep going when I click on it again. Same thin happens if I minimize the window or use "ALT + TAB".
Was it always impossible for Windows 98 to multitask DOS applications and run them on the background? What can I do to work around it??

Check if you have suspend in the background enabled in settings for DOS PROMPT.

is it really paused? or maybe just slowed or muted? because that might be normal

It really stops.
I installed this to use DOS applications, but if I can get some windows98 applications to run (would have to be small, portable, self contained apps) I would maybe let it go of DOS programs 😜
But I don't understand why win3.11 will multitask DOS and win98 won't

i dont have win98 at hand, but still im not sure extreme slowdown and maybe loss of input/output wasn't normal; maybe someone with windows 98 could test? i believe os2 was better at this (and many other things)
i the end this might be depending on software in use;
