Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (original game, not the Steam version)
Windows 98, ME, XP, doesn't seem to matter
Software renderer, Hardware accelerator, backbuffer in system memory, doesn't seem to matter

I don't remember Jedi Knight doing this but it seems no matter what I do, after completing a few levels in Jedi Knight, sooner or later it will crash when trying to load the next level. It gets more frequent the further I press on. I can usually run the next level after restarting Jedi Knight, but why am I having these problems now? Or did Jedi Knight always have problems like this?

Check that you're running the latest patches:
https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Jedi … al_improvements
the latest official patch linked on that page "fixes some joystick and lockup issues"

Have you tried different hardware? I know there are some games that I've had that won't run or have trouble on certain PC platforms. For example, US Navy Fighters needs BIOS shadowing disabled and if your motherboard doesn't have an option to disable in its BIOS, then the game won't work.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

I didn't realize there was a latest patch. I do like using a CD crack though. Maybe that's a factor?

The game crashes in Win98SE on a PC of these specs:

AMD K6-2 400MHz
Voodoo 1 and ATi Rage II+
SB16

And in ME on a PC like this:

Pentium M 1.4GHz
ATi Radeon 7500

And XP on a PC of these specs:

Pentium M 1.2GHz
Intel Extreme 2
