Does anyone know how memmaker detects free UMBs? Is there any way I can find out what UMB regions are free on various retro systems running MS-DOS 6.2? Trying to find a reliable and transferable way to maximise my free memory beyond what memmaker can do.

Hi, yes. You can manually explore which regions are free for UMB usage.
Programs like CheckIt! and MSD can display the memory spots between 640K and 1MB.
However, it is up to you to figure out if these are really free..
Some network cards and video adapters need free spaces at some locations.
Memaker can't foresee their needs, either. That's why the exclude switch of EMM386 exists.
