What is the best Virus scanner for DOS ?

Not sure, but probably anything was better than what shipped with DOS. 😉
I believe I used Carmel Turbo Antivirus (TNT) in the 90s (knew 853 viruses).
Another cool one was on a shareware CD-ROM and had a cool virus database,
with lots of background information. It wasn't F-Prot, though, I believe.

Did anyone manage to set up a FTP server on Windows For Workgroups 3.11 ? I am finding it quite difficult to do.

Edit: Nevermind. I did it with WSFTPD. Security sure is weak, but I am not doing it for any means of production use. Just a local server development with a httpd server and ftp server. Works good enough for me.

@keenmaster486: I remembered the struggle we had to get Outlook to work, and I found something, there's a special version of Outlook 97 for Windows 3.1, but that was made for MS exchange server, unfortunately.

Ah yes, I remember seeing that too.

I think the only viable solution for this is to set up an email forwarder.

Actually I reworked the stunnel concept here for gmail. I have a Windows 3.x VM on iPad Pro gen 2, using an app named UTM. Then I used another app named iSH to run stunnel. Same process used for macOS, and voila, gmail is readable in Outlook and on Windows For Workgroups 3.11, with my iPad Pro. No more need for a mac as MITM!

Forgive me for bumping this topic after three months, but after going each post, I think I might have found a solution for browsing the modern web on retro web browsers. I've been using this proxy on my Raspberry Pi 3 to connect to my Win98SE Dell computer via wireless connection called Browservice. It is a web proxy that uses a chromium-based browser interface and renders webpages on a client's (win98 computer) web browser using java script. From the looks of it, it looks similar to the Web Rendering Proxy (WRP) that someone mentioned in this topic earlier in that Browservice uses its own GUI on the client's browser. However, WRP used images to render web pages and required constant reloading while an action is being performed (clicking on a search bar, ect), whereas Browservice allows you to interact with the web page freely. For more information, check it out at https://github.com/ttalvitie/browservice

I have attached some screenshots of the proxy in action using IE 5.5 and Retrozilla.

There are limitations though:

  • The proxy is only supported on Linux, so you will need a raspberry pi or VM for this.
  • Audio is streamed only from the server (Raspberry Pi), not from the client. I don't think you can use the client's webcam and microphone yet.
  • Depending on the machine or internet connection, websites can be sluggish
  • File upload is not supported. You can download files though

Overall, I highly recommend this if you are looking to chat with family and friends on retro machines using Discord web, Facebook Messenger web, Instagram, and Whatsapp web. No need for IRC and third party IM clients or servers. This is also recommended if you want to download stuff for your retro machines from websites that do not load on old browsers through normal means due to HTTPS.

I would also like to add that if you want to watch videos indirectly from Youtube, try the 9xweb script as shown in https://msfn.org/board/topic/181417-windows-9 … b-helper-9xweb/

I recently figured more out about LInks for DOS to get it to actually run in graphics mode.

Basically put, when Links releases a new version of their browser, they release 2 versions for DOS - a full version (has graphics capability), and a "Lite" version (not compiled with graphics). I'm running the full version of 2.21 now on my NEC Versa M/75, and the "lite" version on th 40EC.

You do trade off a little speed for the graphics mode but browsing speed does not degrade that much. I'd probably not use i on anything under a 486 DX2 at least but YMMV.

Hey all, I just wanted to chime in here. I am the creator of theoldnet.com and I saw someone mention it on this thread. I just wanted to let you know that I have an HTTP Browser proxy that is hosted and free for anyone to use. I put a lot of work into it over December and I plan to add more data sources than just the way back machine!

I have an update going out in a couple of days fixing most of the charset/encoding issues.

Here are the instructions: http://theoldnet.com/docs/httpproxy/index.html

Here's a couple videos of my using it on a windows 98 set up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDQQkDfl9eg&feature=youtu.be

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WirbwPzElZ8&feature=youtu.be

I'm going to get caught up on this thread as I want to understand what features people are looking for. I had offered "new" internet by way of WRP (web render proxy) but it was way too taxing. I haven't tried browservice but I suspect since it's doing screenshots as well it will be heavy as well.

I'm always open to feedback so swing on by and don't forget to sign the guestbook!

Are there any search engines or websites that are “Netscape version 3” and 486 CPU friendly ?
Using HTML version 1 and 2.

Also McAfee was the best AntiVirus application from 1990’s
It would detect All viruses where the Symantec PC would get infected.

I think many are good today. But Back in 1990’s it was McAfee from our testing.
We had a CDROM disk full of Viruses and we would push this over the network onto the PC’s to check
Which ones got infected. In a lab of course not on a public network.

Hi, http://theoldnet.com/find is a search engine which is not only netscape 3 friendly, it's intentionally built for netscape 3.

The search engine searches archive.org for domains as well as homepages for geocities, aol, xoom and angelfire.

I also built a live wikipedia proxy and you can use their search engine: http://theoldnet.com/get?decode=false&scripts … n.wikipedia.org

I am working on adding more data sources which will be old browser compatible including live sites. They will show up as new data sources in the /find tool. Check back through out this year as I have a lot of new features on my todo list!

I find Google works on darn near everything, except images - it'll detect if you have TLS or not and act accordingly. I've not tried Netscape 3 but I'm using Opera 3.62 on my 486's that are running Windows 3.1x and it works great for the most part. I use Links the most though, (links.twibright.com) for my DOS Browser, and I'm starting to use that in WIndows 3.1x because I can run it in text mode in a DOS window and it's TLS Compliant - renders at blazing speed even on a 486 DX2-40. That browser also comes with FreeDOS - that's how I Found out about it. I'm shocked it hardly gets any attention considering how usable it is on the modern internet on all but the slowest retro PC's.

I just fixed my Win98 VM drivers for USB (for some reason after an UTM update, Win98 started asking for them) and now I'm back. I'm even posting this from my Win98 Netscape 9 Browser. Vogons JS and CSS do not work anyway.

However, I need to ask a question - How do I get SMB v1 to work with Win98? I feel that I could connect to my Time Capsule to retrieve some files for Win 98. I have that feeling because when I am using the Win 3.11 VM, the network can find the Time Capsule server and even identify it correctly - but I think I cannot connect yet.

Also, is there any good Win 98 AV software as of now? Even if the database isnt updated.

This thread is about REAL older hardware connectivity NOT emulation .

I wish there was an easy Wayback Machine proxy so I could just open Netscape on my 90s machine, type in an URL and browse the archived version of the site. I mean, http://oldweb.today exists, so this should really be doable, but I don't have the skills to make it happen.

Maybe this has already been mentioned....
