I'm trying to play Midtown Madness but I get graphical glitches. They look like this (excuse the weird GIF.. not sure what I was expecting by asking a 800Mhz Slot 1 to record video footage of itself!)

rkn1F55.gif

It does it on the following graphics card (I've been benchmarking so tried it out on each)
GeForce 3 ti 200
MX 440SE 64bit 64Mb
MX4400 128bit 64Mb
FX5200
FX5500
FX 5900XT

Across drivers 28.x 45.x 56.x
On a SIS 645 based Pentium 4 and a VIA Slot 1 system
On fresh installs and messy installs of Windows 98
On DX 8.2, 8.1 and 7.0a

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Ryzen 3700X | 16GB 3600MHz RAM | AMD 6800XT | 2Tb NVME SSD | Windows 10
AMD DX2-80 | 16MB RAM | STB LIghtspeed 128 | AWE32 CT3910
I have a vacancy for a main Windows 98 PC

Looks like a pedestrian (walking person) is the source of glitch and could be corrupt game installer, get another copy of this game again?

Cheers,

issue maybe is that the game require a very old driver like Detonator 6.xx or 7.xx and your cards are too new to run those drivers. Yo maybe able to mod 7.76 cdrivers to work the the geforce 3

Open the file "NVAGP.INF"

Look for [Mfg] and add this

[Mfg]
%NVIDIA&DEV_0200.DeviceDesc% = NV20,, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0200
%NVIDIA&DEV_0201.DeviceDesc% = NV20,, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0201
%NVIDIA&DEV_0202.DeviceDesc% = NV20,, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0202

Look for [Strings] and add this

[Strings]
NVIDIA&DEV_0200.DeviceDesc="NVIDIA GeForce3"
NVIDIA&DEV_0201.DeviceDesc="NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200"
NVIDIA&DEV_0202.DeviceDesc="NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 500"

The plain GeForce3 should be in there already.

Try that very old driver and see if it work with the game on that card. Its the only card you have that can run it. Also try just running DX 7. not 8.

Report back here with your findings.

The glitches exists with all Geforce cards, even with the oldest drivers I can find. Those distorted polygons come from pedestrians. If you disable pedestrians, the glitches go away, but then you're not playing it "the way it's meant to be played."

The alternative is to use a non-Geforce card. Like an AMD/Ati, 3dfx, Matrox, or a TNT Nvidia.

Cheers,

Can't you switch them off in Modtown Madness?
IIRC, you can switch off almost everything and have to town all to yourself.
I can't remember that well, because it's been over a decade since I last played the game.
