My copy of OSR 2.5 got damaged, so I'm going to have to install OSR 2.1 on the 486 system I'll be setting up tomorrow.

I know that 2.5 had Internet Explorer 4 and DirectX 5, both of which I have. What other big changes were there, and what is the best site for downloading any other available updates/fixes?

Doesn't matter. On a 486 I'd still want to De-integrate IE from windows 95 for reasons, of speed and resources.

Um, excuse my ignorance, but what is so fascinating about Win95 without IE4 and Active Desktop?
Back in the day when we still had Win95 and when it still mattered, I always felt that Win95 looked and felt so.. bureaucratic and "gray in grey" - in comparison to its predecessor, at least.
I surely would have been happy about the new colouful explorer.

because "gray in grey" runs MUCH faster on older hardware

I expect ol' http://www.mdgx.com/ has a link to some sort of unofficial service pack somewhere in its mysterious depths.

While I do run OSR 2.5 on my 486 I skip the IE4 install so really it's just a 2.1 install.
The other big change was the added USB support, doubt a 486 will miss that.

winworldpc has the different versions if you do still want the latest version. even if it is just for kicks.

Not many updates apply to a 486 anyway. I only install Direct X, Windows installer 2.0 and IE5 (just because) none of these case which OSR release it is

Everything else is drivers which MS dont have anything

After reading all the replies, I'm going to remove IE, and probably use Netscape. The board I will be using is a PVI-486SP3, and I will also be testing a spare board I'll be selling in a few days. I may also trim unwanted features using 98lite, if I can do that with an unlicensed copy.

Ew. You'd probably be better off using nothing at all. There are some alternatives discussed in Browsing on My Windows 98 Machine , but they barely work in Windows 98.

98lite is redundant with Windows 95, isn't it? As has been mentioned, you can skip the IE4 install during Windows Setup (apparently).

Dplus browser is great for old Windows PCs. It is OK for downloading files, google search etc. Very lightweight. Generally works with modern websites, but removes a lot of formatting, scripts, etc. https://sourceforge.net/projects/dplus-browse … ses/dplus-0.5b/

Oh dear/ Two versions of the board, and I'm getting problems on both. On the board I wanted to sell, I can get no video output on the VLB slot or any of the PCI slots, with cards that work on the later board.

On the working board, I get "Loading MSDOS", then nothing - possibly the floppy discs are corrupt from age 🙁

Going to write images off my hard drive onto floppies tomorrow, and try again. Or make Win 95 boot discs, and skip running DOS 6.22.
