I heard OS/2, early versions, have problems booting and installing with a " fast" CPU (anything beyond 386 or 486 won't work, without modifying the binary). I was wondering, what does "fast" mean here? I mean, there are 100MHz 486 CPU's, is that "too fast" for OS/2 1.1?

I would love to know a little more about what is the max CPU speed (and type) needed for OS/2 1.0, 1.1 to run without changing the binary.

Personally I don't run anything earlier than Warp v3 which runs fine on a K6-2 266 test rig. v3 is faster than v2 as well as having more features.

I have boxed sets of OS/2 from IBM 1.3EE up to v4.0 Server.

A little more information about installing OS/2, apparently the versions facing the run problem are 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 (see http://www.os2museum.com/wp/installing-os2-1- … -virtualbox-vm/), though it mentions 386 as "fast" in other documents it mentions 486 as well (https://www.os2museum.com/wp/os2-history/os2-1-1/).

If anyone is interested, I did a few tests and apparently the fastest CPU you can use (without patching the files) is i486DX2 CPUs, anything faster than that (for example, i486DX4/75) won't boot at all without patching the installation files.

Cool, thanks for the information! 😎

So far, I've did some testing with OS/2 1.x in a VM and on a 286 only.
I vaguely remember there were some differences with the MS and IBM releases.
The MS releases included some more 386 code, if memory serves.

Microsoft OS/2 1.3 runs fine in Pentium MMX machine. OS/2 2.11 also runs fine in Pentium MMX. Warp runs in even a Pentium 3. My experience.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

OS/2 Warp3 installation quit with error3. I now change the drivers because the HDD is larger than 8GB (40GB)
Machine is P3/500 512MB IntelBX440 AtiRageProLT Onboard.

Well known and documented issue. There are very good tutorials to rectify it. How many over gig IDE drives in 1994?
