processor is amd k6 III+
operating system is Windows 7, Windows ME, Debian Jessie (triple boot)
what browser and version I should download? I imagine lack of sse will make newer versions not work?

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but you might be able to run a relatively recent browser on Windows 7 or Debian Jessie if you compile it yourself using only CPU flags that your K6-3 supports .

turns out that a lot of stuff these days needs sse

From what little i've read the SSE2 requirement is due to Visual Studio Code.
oh and yes, lynx is a text browser 😁

TBH, I don't know if this is even likely to succeed on any platform . I have no idea if there is anything in the source code that would require an SSE (and also now SSE2) supporting target architecture to be set as a compilation target to even successfully compile . However, I am not a programmer, so I may be completely off-base . EDIT : I would use Linux, as I doubt there are any free Windows running build environments in existence that could easily and successfully compile a recent Firefox build while also allowing a non-SSE build target . Again, I am not a programmer, so I may be off-base on that too .
However, on a different note, look here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p= … af903e#p1669373 and here https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3787
I cannot find corroboration of this anywhere, but apparently, according to 2 people in the first linked thread, the build of Firefox 68 that is bundled with the 32-bit release of Linux Mint 19.2 “Tina” Mate (second link) does start without crashing on a non-SSE Duron CPU, so it could conceivably do the same on your CPU .
EDIT: Additionally, RAM requirements of modern Firefox builds are monstrous . As a quick check, a freshly started x64 current build of Firefox on a Window 10 x64 machine uses over 300MB while displaying the google.ca .
Huh.. well. It’s all gonna be in page file then 🤣. Which isn’t so bad on this machine because my page file is 95mb/sec and my ram is 76mb/sec (how does that work? Lol) at least that’s what memtest tells me
You're pretty much out of luck on prebuilt browsers, I think.
There is a fork of Palemoon, called "New Moon" that could work without SSE if you build it yourself. I think the binaries provided only do SSE1 at the minimum, though:
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/
So you need at least a Pentium MMX and XP (yeah, painful) or 2000 with Blackwingcat's kernel for a useable modern browser.
Edit: Although I'm not sure what the IA-32 builds are. Maybe these would work?

As mentioned in my previously post, apparently Linux Mint 19.2 Mate comes with a pre-built Firefox 68 that does work on a non SSE CPU ( https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p= … af903e#p1669373 ) . I could actually try it as I do have a Pentium II CPU (hence without SSE) that I could try this on, if I can be bothered to find a CD-RW disc (I am not going to waste anything from my stash of high quality CD-R blanks for a test and not I am not masochistic enough to boot Linux off a USB thumb drive over USB 1.1 😉 ) .
For Jessie Firefox ESR should run with enough ram, say 256megs so should the Gnome browser and a few others. Worked fine on my K6-2 266 setup. There is a web site dedicated to browsers for old MS Windows versions.

Apparently 32-bit is dead and nobody likes P4s.
Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

worked?
Warlord wrote on 2021-03-01, 15:55:worked?
from the first quote palemoon 28 failed to start basalisk also failed to start 27 started and kept restarting
it may be because I'm using windows 7
Ya 28 and basilisk will never work

There are 3 versions of 27. SSE2 ver, sse 1 ver, and no sse so you want to try "no sse"
Then Kmelon goanna test build. There are now better builds but this one might work.,

This is the latest km build but i doubt it will work.

Try NetSurf: https://packages.debian.org/jessie/netsurf-gtk or there is also netsurf-fb for the framebuffer
Or links: https://packages.debian.org/jessie/links2 (links is the text-only version)
Neither will handle "modern" webpages well but they do work with vogons.org.
Hello,
I can build the latest Palemoon (aka New Moon 3DNow) and the latest Seamonkey too on Debian 8 for K6-X cpus (and any i586 arch cpu with 3dnow instructions set), it works quite acceptable if you have at least 384mb ram (more is better of course), you can find any other old cpu friendly Linux browsers rebuilds here.
