I recently tried to run BeOS R5 (Personal Edition) on a Sandy Bridge Core i3 using a Radeon x800 XL graphics card set as the primary display device (I previously set up the drive on this system using the built-in Intel graphics). BeOS begins to boot, but freezes prior to the lightning bolt icon. When I run the debugger, it reports the following error:

“KERNEL PANIC: vm_list_remove : -138542 not in free list"

I get this same error if I use a PCI-based Matrox G200 card as the primary display device as well. I also get this same error if I try to boot into the original IMAGE.BE virtual drive.

If I boot the computer with the integrated Intel graphics as the primary display device, BeOS will boot to the desktop, but it then immediately switches to the x800 as the primary display output (same with the G200). BeOS then works fine off of the PCI display device.

Does anyone here know what would cause the BeOS boot failure when the computer assigns a PCI device as the primary display adapter, yet boots properly with the integrated graphics?
