Hello,

Attempting to install an original copy of commander keen aliens ate my babysitter and the first 2 disks install but when it comes to the third disk it stops mid way and does this :

Part 1:

Part 2:

So the stranger thing is this is only happening with the third disk and the game is running on windows 10 which is said to be problematic with floppies and is running through dosbox. However I attempted a few tries after it didn’t work another time and identical set of original disks both stored well and is good condition.

The 3rd floppy in the game was cleaned with a bit of water and very very tiny bit of alcohol, later... with attempts to lock and unlock the floppy including refreshing the screen and copying files to the folder, which didn’t work.

What could be this be resolved through ?

1. Trying it or emulating it outside of dosbox and windows 10. Alternative operating system Emulator maybe even through windows 10 ?
2. Do the previous disks, disk 1 and disk 2 need to be cleaned , maybe some data needed to read from the previous that wasn’t reading due to this, or that all floppies need to be locked or unlocked at the same? Does locking the disk really protect in windows 10?
2. Cleaning the floppies with a better alcohol ? Isopropyl 70 percent was used. Maybe Ethanol or a different formula?
3. Dirty component that could be cleaned ? Usb Floppy drive is new ? Maybe trying another one? Or certain brand that works better ?
4. Floppy recovery that recovers the disk as is or service people/company who can restore it ? It’s pretty expensive game so worth it if possible

Anything else ? The kind of error is evident in the video. It goes half way.

Here is the screen capture

Do you have other, less expensive floppies you can use for testing?

I wouldn't be surprised if the disks worked better in an older, non-USB floppy drive. I doubt it is a software problem. If you want to eliminate software from consideration, then use something that can make an image of the floppies, and then try using the images in DOSBox. See Floppy disk imaging - what program to use? .
