A few years ago i bought a set of Vtech laser MS-dos 4.01 floppy disks (which where the originals.)

The data on them where readable, to a almost non-working state. One floppy from the select copy where making strange noises at some point on the disk
Luckily with brute force read ahead i could get an working image out of it.

Today i made new installation disks to use them again. I have re-created them on DS-DD 720KB

In total i have got 8 diskettes.

Disk1
Disk2
Disk 3
Install
Select
Select Copy
Dosshell

And a little less important Utility disk.

I`d really like to know which is which and in which order do i use them?

Hi! I assume that the select disk is for configuration.
Like setting up nationality, format of the date/time, code page etc.

Install should be the first disk, if it is part of the DOS installation.
It might be followed by Disk 1-3 etc.

I'll have a look at my IBM 4.01 bundle tomorrow. From memory that required you to make installation disks up the 720k floppies and you install from those.

Fit the install disk the drive in first and boot the system.

Edit- Yip. IBM DOS 4.01 came on two 720K and created the installation disks:

Install is probably 1st. You could always just use the images you created and brute force install it in a VM and figure out which combination works. Thats what Id do.

I dont have experience with VM (never used it)

I only found out that i only can use these diskettes as boot disk:

-Install.

That is correct. They will either create Dos 4.01 disks or install Dos 4.01 on the hdd. The install disk will ask what optton you want from a list. Once you have made you selection the install disk will eventually ask for the select disk(Called Operating on my IBM Dos 4.01 set)...then install disc.....then the select disk... untill the installation of Dos 4.01 is completed.
