I am having a weird problem on my 486 that nobody else seems to have.

I have an ESS AudioDrive 1868F that my CD Drive connects to using the IDE header. When I don't install windows, everything is just fine. But once windows is installed, it runs slower than you'd imagine possible. It's terrifying.

It takes more than two minutes for it to finish, and the end result is always the same, it finds the CD drive, big whoop.

Has anyone else experienced this? I don't have any other sound cards I can use to test.

Hi! I'm not sure, but I have a suspicion.

After installation, Windows 3.x loves to change autoexec.bat/config.sys.

Perhaps it changes the order of the entries of the PATH= statement.
If so, DOS will load drivers from C:\WINDOWS first instead from C:\DOS or something along these lines.

So maybe it loads a different version of EMM386, HIMEM.SYS or MSCDEX thus..

If you're not sure, try swapping the order.
PATH = C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;

Or maybe Windows setup installs SmartDrive, too?
Maybe that's why things take little bit longer, not sure.
