I have a Windows 98 machine that recognizes a USB joystick in the control panel; I can see all the axis and buttons working, etc. The joystick "just works" when I run the DOS versions of Doom, Duke3D, and Quake. It does not however, work with Descent.

There is no feedback that a joystick was detected when the program starts up. And choosing "calibrate joystick" from the options menu doesn't do anything.

Is it possible to use a Windows-configured joystick with the DOS version of Descent?

Hi there! 🙂 I believe it's perhaps because Descent uses a DOS4GW type of DOS Extender.
Maybe that's why the gameport/joystick emulation doesn't work.

Hm. Maybe there's a way to patch Descent somehow?
I remember that Descent 1+2 had a lot of patches for different purposes.

It's just a wild guess. It's been a while since I actually played Descent.
Last time I ran it was for testing my vintage 3D glasses. 🤓
Before, I used it to test a Dreamblaster S1 synth module, I vaguely remember.

Good luck! 🙂👍
