hi.

I installed Final Fantasy VII (the version for Windows 95) on my retro gaming laptop, but everytime i try to play it the screen goes black for a couple of seconds, the CD starts to work and then it goes back to my desktop.
I tried to re-installed it, but got the same result. Other games with 3D Engines like Quake,Quake 2, Tomb Raider and Unreal work fine.

The game works fine on my Compaq Presario with Win98.

Here's my computer specs:

Dell Latitude XPi CD M166st
Year: 1997
Processor: Pentium MMX 166
RAM: 32MB
HDD: 1.5GB
Audio : ESS 1887,ESS 690 wavetable music synthesizer
Video controller: NeoMagic 2093 LCD
Dimensions (active area): 800X600

Perhaps you are missing a codec for the movies to play, which will occur first before proceeding into gameplay. Are you running Windows 98 or Windows 98SE? I believe Direct Media 6 is built-in to 98SE since it is running DirectX 6.1 out of the box, so this option below might not be necessary.

There are several options to try:

Check the Install CD for any codec packs, first.
Install the Intel Indeo 5 codec pack.
DirectX Media 6 (DXMEDIA.EXE)
Window Media Player 7, 7.1 or 9. Also, here's link to a Microsoft codec package which supplements Windows Media Player (but I'm not sure the version of which it is dependent).
