From a dump of the old LucasArts FTP that I downloaded a while back I got a file called TIESND.EXE which contains some patches related to the game sound. This section of the README.TXT file drew my attention:

This patch was designed to correct the hanging notes that can sometimes occur when using GMIDI or Roland music in TIE-Fighter.

Does anyone know if this actually refers to the infamous SB16 MPU-401 hanging note bug? Or is it another hanging note bug altogether? I know this and a few other games (such as Duke Nukem 3D) have another bug when using 16-bit digital samples + MPU-401 that occurs even on cards with bug-free DSP, but that is more of a stutter kind of issue, not hanging note.

I cannot test it myself at the moment, so I was curious if anyone else had applied this patch before. I can attach the file if necessary.

TIE-Fighter Sound Patch

This patch was designed to correct the hanging notes
that can sometimes occur when using GMIDI or Roland
music in TIE-Fighter.

It also features direct support for the Ensoniq
SoundScape audio card. To select this, run setmuse
and select "Express Setup".

This patch will also allow Pro Audio Spectrum users to use
the 16-bit high DMA setting of their card.

The INSTALL.BAT file will look for your TIE directory at the
C:\TIE prompt. If you have installed the game to another
directory, simply copy the 5 files to the directory where
the game is located.

Have Fun!!

The later released 1995 TIE Fighter CD does not work well with SB16 and MPU-401 music together. So in practice they never got it to work properly.
