Anybody have or know where i can find some benchmark info for the 1998 Quake 2 engine based game Sin (v1.11) ?

Im getting quite iffy performance on my AMD K6-2+ 550Mhz and 7000 PCI (catalyst 4.3) .
System is well setup, most other games including Quake an HL2 run quite well.

Tried a Matrox G450, it was worse. Tried a Voodoo 2000 PCI and it was also worse than the Radeon. Im getting 30-40 FPS in corridors and small areas but once in big areas with enemies its dropping to 10 or lower.
Ive got it at 640x480, most settings on high or enabled.

When this game came out, i ran it on my Pentium 1 233MMX in software mode, so im not sure why its running so poorly on a much faster system. Q2 engines arent usually a big problem for SS7 so im not sure whats the problem.
It seems like a lack of CPU power but that doesnt make sense to me, hence would be nice to see what numbers others are getting.

Win 98 Retro PC: AMD K6-2+ @ 550mhz, Mitac 5114VU motherboard, 256MB RAM, Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB DDR
Win 95 Retro PC: Intel Pentium 233mmx, Elpina M571 motherboard, 32MB EDO RAM, Voodoo 3 2000 16MB PCI
Main PC: AMD Ryzen 7700x, 32GB DDR5-6000, Geforce 3080

What commands are you running to benchmark Sin?

Without knowing your settings I played the first mission of Sin with the following:

Athlon XP 1800+
512MB Ram
Voodoo 5 5500 AGP

I ran it at 1024x768 in 3dfx opengl mode and its seemed like it was constantly hitting 75FPS which is the max refresh of the monitor I was using. If you give me the commands you ran I will give you an actual comparison.

Im just checking the FPS in the first level to judge performance. Im not running the built in benchmarks because i dont know the right commands 😜

I just played this with all my machines. The only one that showed any slowdowns outside was the Xeon 3230 when running with a Voodoo 2 card (800x600). With settings set to the Standard High with 3d acceleration there was slowdown outside but more like in the 20 FPS range than 10. I don't know if this helps you at all because the CPU is loads faster than the one you're using.

benchmarks from back in the day:

maybe you can find this rocket.dm2 and run it for comparison. also since you have a voodoo3, try running the minigl renderer which should already offer a speedup, and then replace it with the 3dnow optimized one, which will be the best case scenario for your CPU. nevertheless, going by the anandtech results it's pretty clear that pentium ii has quite a big advantage over k6 clock for clock in this game.

also, i wouldn't just go by what engine was used to judge requirements, because for instance hexen ii is quite a bit more demanding than quake despite using the same engine... even the quake expansion paks are heavier than the base game. sin probably does have bigger and somewhat more complex environments than q2.

Okay so i did improve the performance of the game on the K6-2+ somewhat but still wasnt as good as it should be.

I tried it on my AthlonXP system with Radeon X800 to see how the game looks and runs maxed out, but i had issues there as as well. It runs faster now but the geometry looks wonky. As if its constantly wobbling or warping like its running on a PS1.
Seems no matter what or how I run it i get some issues.

It sounds like you might be in software mode? I tested this on a Voodoo 2, a Voodoo 5, a radeon 9800 pro, and an NVidia 780ti, and managed to get it working and playable on each. There's something else going on.

Really ? I seem to notice it more on the newer system, maybe thats due to the higher settings and FPS that makes it noticeable.

I know with some games when ATI TruForm isnt working properly it does this, but AFAIK Sin doesnt support TruForm.
