VOGONS

I tried running NFS: Porsche Unleashed on my Windows 98 SE setup with a GeForce4 4200 Ti.

While it lets me select it as a graphics option in the 3D setup, in-game the main menu does not display any proper textures. I just get a bunch of empty rectangles.

I also have a Voodoo2 installed and using that card, the game has no issues. It just won't let me run in a resolution higher than 800x600.

I'm running Windows 98 SE, nVidia drivers version 77.72, and I've tried both DirectX 7.0a and DirectX 8.0 with the same results.

Any suggestions on options? Should I try different nVidia drivers? Or is this just an incompatibility with the Geforce4, similar to NFS 3: Hot Pursuit?

That's your problem right there. Those drivers are way to new for Win9x gaming. Try something like 30.82. Unless your card is of the AGP 8x variety, in which case go for 45.23.

I don't remember any particular GeForce4 incompatibilities with NFS3, other than the lack of fog on non-Voodoo cards. What problem did you encounter exactly?

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Thanks, the 30.82 drivers worked!

In hindsight I'm not even sure why I even had the 77.72 drivers installed. Though I think at one point I was testing GeForce 6800 in this system and probably never switched the drivers back...

Same issue as with NFS: Porsche Unleashed. Though with the 30.82 drivers, NFS 3 also ended up working.

the voodoo I could not only do 640 x 480 and the voodoo II only a maximum resolution of 1024 x 800.
Maybe try with a lower resolution?

To clarify, the issue wasn't with the Voodoo2 card. It worked fine.

The issue was with the GeForce4 which has now been resolved via downgrading my drivers to 30.82.
