98se is in a way a cumulation of work done to windows 95 to 98 Second Edition. Think of 98se as 95 Service pack 5.

The core OS didn't change it was improved on and bugs were fixed. By the time 98se released, all of the bugs from 95 and 981st had been worked out. 9x became basically as stable as it was ever going to be.

There a lot of 98se updates, however almost none of them have anything to do with gaming or system stability. Almost all of them are security fixes, and most of those are related to Internet explorer in some way.

They are actually not security fixes in reality, becasue there is no way to secure 98se outside of disconnecting it from the internet. They end up making the OS slower and in some cases more unstable and introduce bugs and regressions.

Some of the updates actually hurt the OS, like the WDM update, as it has shown to effect drivers and games.

So please, unless your system has a specific problem like its not shutting down properly, as there is around 5 different fixes that try to adress this problem. Just leave it alone.

That being said there are some updates I recommend installing.
MSI installer 2.0
NOVOLTRK registry patch to keep 9X from corrupting floppy disks
Direct X 7 and only higher version if the video card needs it. Otherwise newer version than 7a will break some sound cards, video cards and games.
TweakUI
VBrun 1,2,3,4,5
VC++6
nusb2.2e If you use USB
TCP 1.4 if you use tcp
Q240896 Open GL update
Doshere from 95 powertoys
WinG

Ie 5.5sp2 only if you have a program that needs otherwise dont update IE. Avoid IE 6.

Edit.
Rloew patches. I have nothing aginst them, and I recommend them if your system needs them especially large hard drive support, its better than official ones.

That just about covers it unless you have a specific problem in which case a specific update would solve, but not adding 30 updates to fix a problem that one update would fix and then intruduce 7 other problems.

I agree with this. For gaming purposes, all you need are the Windows Installer Update and DirectX. Both of these are required in order for certain drivers and utilities to install correctly.

Which version of DirectX to use depends on the hardware that you're running. Generally, you want at least DirectX 7.0a, since even the latest official Voodoo 3 drivers need that version. Going further is recommended if you're using a high-end Win9x GPU, like something from the GeForce FX lineup or the Radeon 9000 series. However, Aureal Vortex 2 cards don't like anything above DirectX 7.0a, so be mindful of that if you're using one of those.

PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

"NOVOLTRK registry patch to keep 9X from corrupting floppy disks" !! Should had known that back then! I create special disks for configuring computers by booting with these and absolutely must be careful not to accidentally get 98SE "mark" them hence ruining them.

Oh, hey, I vote to make this thread pinned to the top permanently as go to references.

Cheers,

Why bother with patchwork ME transplant "service packs" when you could just install Windows ME? 😀

If considering using DOS then WinME is generally not a good idea. Despite there are some good efforts in properly restoring DOS functionality to WinME, the DOS 8.0 that came with WinME has some serious limitations.

I've discovered a hotfix to Directx 7a, a gaming related patch.
269604usa8

Another library update 3dcontrols that some games use. Includes all of the 3d control files.
3DCTRLS My fresh 98se contained 3 out of the 4 files. I was missing 1 file.

The dirextx7 CPL from the directx 7 sdk place file in system directory.
directx7 CPL

Added WinG library to the 1st post, some older games like win Doom need it.

🤣. I actually can't fix my shutdown issue no matter what I try. It runs scandisk every single time no matter what. That's literally the only thing I wish I could fix. I think it just really hates a SSD on a startech adapter.

These updates are only for specific shutdown problems. don't install if you don't have this problem.

The article above mentions you should install this hotfix also with the IDE cache fix. It's for scsi but many ATAPI devices use a SCSI miniport driver because the command set is the same for both ATAPI and SCSI.

@Warlord,

First of all, thank you for posting the list of patches and prooviding links to all of them.

Now, I have already tried all of those, but you might find this hilarious. I just tested something that I hadn't tried before. As part of the IDE Hard Drive Cache package (which you linked above), a registry key is created that adds a 2-second delay to the shutdown process to provide the hard drive cache time to flush to disk. Out of curiosity, I increased that to 4 seconds. I just had a clean cold boot (no scan disk), so... maybe it was a fluke, or maybe I just needed to increase the delay. Time will tell.

Happy to help. Sounds like that fixed it. Yea the KB Article alludes that the value can be changed to increase duration until it works. Hopefully this helps others facing the same situaltion.

The last option I guess is just to disable scandisk on reboot in msconfig, which would get rid of scan disk but not fix the problem.

I need this thread stickied so I can have reference in future as you know I can't remember the name of this topic and I'm poor with searching to find this thread again.

This is GOOD reference than anywhere else.
