When you click 'convert format', sound recorder calls acmFormatChoose in MSACM32.DLL which brings up the selection dialog box. If the ACMFORMATCHOOSE_STYLEF_INITTOWFXSTRUCT flag is set (web search says this is bit 6) in the ACMCHOOSEFORMAT structure then it will look at the WAVEFORMATEX structure to determine the initial selection. So there is the possibility of hacking sndrec32.exe to have a specific default format here. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win … acmformatchoose

Alternatively, you can look in the registry under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio where it lists the presets "CD quality" "Radio quality" "Telephone quality" and you can redefine these by tweaking the data under the WaveFormats key. You can add additional ones using the Sound Selection dialog box itself, although it doesn't seem to work with alternate codecs (at least under Windows 2000 if I pick a LAME MP3 bitrate and save it, the saved setting does not work).

again another retro game on itch: https://90soft90.itch.io/shmup-salad
