Hi and a very happy new year to all of you. I recently installed unofficial sp3 on my Win98 computer like so (with a reboot between every step):

clean Win98 install
install all hardware drivers
install MSI installer (InstMsiA)
install VB 6.0 runtime files (Visual Basic 6.0 with Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 5 Run Time Files)
install vc_6.0_redist_x86.exe
install IE6 SP1
install U98SESP3.63 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.63) - core files only
install U98SESP3.66 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.66) - core files only
install U98SESP3.66 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.66) - DX9 only
install U98SESP3.66 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.66) - performance tweaks only
install U98SESP3.66 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.66) - enable DMA on all IDE drives
The issue is that after step 8 (I think), the windows 98 startup routine kinda got screwed over. I get a weird error screen about invalid setting in msdos.sys file, and then the win98 startup screen is partially cut out at the top.

How do I get rid of this behavior? Or how do I prevent this behavior while still installing all the above stuff? Would really appreciate any help..

My experience with the Windows 98 "Service pack" was not good, and absent any compelling reason to try and make it work, I've never again bothered. I recommend this guide: Generic Win98SE Installation & Setup Guide

I had the same experience with the "service pack". It messes up everything.

Unfortunately, the English version is very bloated by now, so you would be better off using an earlier version or even version 2.x by the original author "Gape/ Alper Coskun":

This may be the culprit in your case:

install U98SESP3.63 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.63) - core files only
install U98SESP3.66 (unofficial Win98 service pack 3.66) - core files only

Why did you install the core files twice which different versions of the SP?

You should try sticking with 3.63 and omit 3.66 completely.

The 3.xx versions replace a lot of stock 9x files with ones from later windowses and it causes various incompatibility issues. 2.x and 3.0x do not do that and are going to work a whole lot better.
