With all the talk of this Dream bank being directly derived from the Sound Canvas sound set, I am curious. There is one file that I have noticed only sounds the way it should on Roland devices (among brands in common use with 90s PCs), so if anyone with access to a prototype would be willing to give the attached file a try, we will find out if it's as close to Roland's implementation as some (even old magazines) have claimed.

It is worth noting that I have no Yamaha devices to try, so they may get the right sound out of it too. The X2 with its default bank is among those that do not. There are no tricks or obscure features in use here; just particular instruments in the Roland map that many other cards left out altogether or recorded differently.

EDIT: Fixed the sloppy attachment. I also wanted to mention that the file does play on most devices; it's just missing instruments, producing sub-optimal sound.

That's not a bad approximation at all. At the very least, they have more of the right instruments in the right places than quite a number of other designs of the time. Still, to say that the samples were taken directly from the Sound Canvas seems like quite an exaggeration. The instrument characteristics and volume balance are not quite the same (the pounding bass drum, for instance), but for those seeking an internal device for basic usage, this could make an excellent poor-man's "Sound Canvas".

So many sound card projects lately. Is this "baby boom" thanks to the lockdowns? 😜

Like cde earlier, I'm also a bit confused by the capabilities of the different offerings (this, DreamBlaster X2, Synth S2, other daughter boards). Is it just a matter of having different sound engines, or are there some other features that play a role?

The Rise of the Triad MIDI sample for this board sound great btw. I love the music from that game and these might be one of the best renditions of them I've heard so far.

Serge will explain it better but..

Dreamblaster S2: Small daughterboard with a fixed 4Mbit (512K) Cleanwave sound set and FM Synthesizer that adds effects to it.
Dreamblaster X2: Large daughterboard with a 64MB flash ROM that you can program with soundbanks and equalizer settings
Yucatan FX: TurtleBeach CancunFX clone that has (basically) the Roland GS sound bank (with probably some extra bells and whistles, such as an equalizer etc.)

That's a very reasonable price. I loved the way the demos sounded so I'd like to claim one 😀
