Here's something I thought would be cool to record: Doom E1M1 on a Casio GM keyboard. I really only use it as wavetable synthesizer in GM games so for me it classifies as sound 'card' 🤣
I often do the same with a Korg Digital Piano, it has only 16 instruments out of the GM 128, so I usually let it play using only the n°1 as if I had a good piano player in the room...
I have a request to make. Can someone record X-Com's intro with an MT-32? I've always wanted to hear this rendition, but I can't find it anywhere on the Internet and don't have an MT-32 either...
How about some Waveblaster II recordings? Or Terratec Wave Xtable?
Some recordings of PCMCIA sound cards:

Ratoc REX-5570 http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GTKBLJSL
Panasonic CF-VEW211 http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0ETP5QZT
Panasonic CF-VEW212 (OPL4) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0DN9UG8C
Most recordings were done with the midi files played directly.
Special recordings of the Panasonic cards unique feature can be found in my "Pcmcia sound cards" thread.
Installed a Sound Blaster 16 today, and I must say I'm a bit disappointed. Here are some recordings:
Jazz Jackrabbit:
http://www.box.com/s/xsheou6rgcym2x8ynzod
This doesn't sound too bad, but IMO it's not exactly great either. Compare to this recording of the Yamaha YMF719:
http://www.box.com/s/v96iu9evxi4y7e46n1u2
Epic Pinball:
http://www.box.com/s/7ohctf0gyf4qu3it82qd
Now this is bad. It starts out okay at 22KHz sampling rate, but once I select a table it jumps to 11KHz and stays there until I reset the whole PC. I used to have an ESS card that did this too, but at least it didn't sound as bad as this SB does.
Compare to this: http://www.box.com/s/t5ou5mm65khx2zqbty8c
This is a CT2960 PnP card with Vibra16C chip by the way. I wonder if the original non-pnp version sounds any different.
Here's a short MIDI comparison with the Apogee theme:
http://www.box.com/s/ubjkapj5qf5d00ynsa6u
First part is from the SB16 with fake OPL3, second part is the YMF719 with real on-chip OPL3, last part is my Casio keyboard.
Awesome guys! Thanks for the effort 😀
SB16 cards very heaps in quality. For Epic Pinball a GUS is recommended.
I like the SB Pro 2.0, it sounds better than all the SB16 cards I tried (I admit I only tried a few).
Lolo799 thanks heaps for the PCMCIA sound card recordings. Definitely something that was missing on VOGONS.
Yeah I don't even bother with SB16's any more. I use either an SB Pro or if I want MIDI I use a clone card like the YMF719, which is IMO one of the best ISA clone cards around.
If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.
wrote:. . . . I love the AudioPCI! It blows the AWE out of the water and that at a much lower price with almost no fancy components on the card.
Well I got to say I hardly heard much about Ensoniq, but I like it more and more 🤣
You are aware that the Ensoniq AudioPCI is really the SB16PCI and several other cards? SB128PCI and everything inbetween IIRC.
I have a collection of various models of the ensoniq audiopci cards, they are the only card I will use with xp 32 bit and older systems. If they had a windows xp64 and vista/7 driver I would be using them still in my non music systems.

Other way round 😀
Creative bought Ensoniq and re-branded the AudioPCI as a Creative card.
I wrote a guide ages ago: Ensoniq / Creative AudioPCI
It has the Ensoniq and Creative drivers, explains the differences between the drivers and a few recordings.
Descent in particular sounds very good with this card. And they are cheap as chips to get.
On a slightly unrelated note, I wanted to point out that swaaye's sound card recording flash player website worked perfectly on my 486 in NT4/IE6 using Flash Player 7r73 winax. Although it sucks up 100% of the CPU, there were no skips. This is probably one of the few remaining flash websites which will still work with old Flash versions, not to mention on a 486. The less times I need to KVM over to my P3, the better!
Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.
I've done some recordings of the Diamond Edge3D card. That's NVIDIA NV1, which is an all-in-one 3D,2D and audio accelerator with hardware wavetable.
According to the NVIDIA NV1 PDF it even has FM emulation but I don't think it was ever implemented. The DOS driver (rm.exe) only supports MPU-401 in DOS so you can only use General MIDI. There is no FM support in Windows either. There is no Sound Blaster support for pure DOS or within Win9x DOS box.
The card has 3 MIDI settings. (see screenshot [top radio button is default])

I've added ESS ES1869 recordings. I've been curious about the ESFM synth.
The card is easy to setup. Basically you just plug it in and power up and you're good to go. It's PNP and my BIOS setup the resources perfectly. The card doesn't need any drivers to work with DOS games.
It's SBPro compatible and their synth seems to sound exactly like OPL3. Output signal quality of the card was good too, better than my real SBPro 2. My card is just a plain generic model. It also has a DB connector but there's not enough room to mount a regular size DB.
SBPro 2 is recorded as well for comparison.
ESS's ESFM sounds different from YMF262, but it is the closest clone for sure. ESS put a lot of work into it, and in some cases, I'd argue it's better than a real YMF262. The nice thing is that the ESS SOLO-1 also incorporates ESFM, and it is for PCI... so... you could have pretty near-YMF262 support with a computer that supports PCI cards. I'm surprised not many have considered this as an alternative to emulators in modern computers.
The noise generator of course, is completely different. In fact, even CT1747 has a different noise generator from YMF262.
I re-uploaded most of the recordings. They are on Mediafire now.

O, found this theme.
I'm record some games to, so maybe someone will be interested. Grabbed directly from real games in clean dos (if not noticed other).
